Today Has Been a Difficult Day for Me

For various reasons that are pretty much all work-related, today found me weeping at my desk. Only for a short time, and I'm back in control now, but my spirit still feel a little leaden.

Rather than dwell on that, or write something that sounds like a plea for sympathy, what I would love to hear from all of you out there:
  • Something really nice that happened to you today.
  • Something funny that happened to you.
  • A lovely picture you saw that you could describe to me, or that you have and could share with me now.
  • A song or piece of music that lifted your spirits recently, and that you think I might like.
  • A joke.
  • Cats, pictures or gifs thereof. Those always rock.
  • A gif that might make me snort with laughter.
  • Any reminder of good things in the world, human or otherwise.

Thank you all - and I'll try to do the same thing for any of you when I'm less of a fucking wet-blanket.

I watched the last half of the Eurovision Song Contest in the best possible circumstances: drunk, in London, with Patrick. It was the best thing evaarr. Also, the weirdest. How Portugual won, I cannot imagine. The yodeling/rapping Romanians were not the best, but they sure won for odd.

London is wonderful and amazing. The world is full of brilliant beauty. And it is very, very odd.

I maintain that it is the most beautiful piece of music ever composed and, if you hear it performed live in a room with the right acoustics, you can feel it vibrate through your whole chest cavity.

Every so often I just lie on my back with my eyes closed and listen to it through in order to feel a bit more at peace with the universe : )

Yeees. It's starting to get to some of the juicier parts of the story now. And the animation has become even better.

2. Something funny that happened to you.

The bus driver on my home trip took off in entirely the wrong direction and we all made hen-like noises of alarm until he reached the roundabout, turned, and came back the right way.

*hugs* Do take care of yourself!

And have a whole tumblr full of kittens!

I was trying to leave some old telly gifs, but my pc objected eventually, so maybe it was as well, but I tried again, and found some shiny newer things to scatter among them to appease the gods (and maybe make it a better collection for you):

(Liz is fed up with working too hard as well). (From this lovely Liz gifset.)

Some smiling James Maxwells (with bonus Rachel Roberts and a monkey):

And you sound as if you could use an Ace up your sleeve:

And random gifs:

And some 1990s journalist issues (courtesy of Press Gang).

ETA: Sorry about all the editing. And, oh my, I accidentally made Bill flirt with Emma Peel. *dies a bit*

Luckily Jo is incoming! ;-)

I'm glad you liked them. tumblr may be many things, but it's top notch for pretty & funny pics and gifs! Plenty of kitties for you. <3

Here are a couple of extra gif/photosets you might enjoy:

From the early 1990s, Dexter Fletcher, explaining part of Press Gang's success is due to the Scottish guy who writes the scripts

Peter Capaldi, on the most random question he's ever been asked.

And my very old photoset of David Collings posing in doorways.

This week has been rather an odd one, so despite having a v nice b'day, I didn't have many nice stories to share (I mean, my next door neighbours have RATS, it's very disturbing! this is my weird week, at least I'm not my neighbours...) but I do occasionally pause and remember that sometimes someone just comes along and casually points a person to JM's yearbook from college online, complete with photo of him aged 20, ten years younger than anything else I can find. (He was two school years ahead, so the academically clever thing seems to have been pretty true.) So I am always cheered by this, not just because it is a pic of JM, but as a reminder that you never know what nice thing may happen next.

I don't know if you watch Criminal Minds: SVU, but there's one case where they're dealing with smuggled exotic animals, and someone tries to smuggle a gibbon in a basketball. When they open the basketball, the gibbon comes out and gives Captain Cragen a big hug. It's adorable and ridiculous.

It's a long and complicated explanation for this gif:
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

In my head, he takes the gibbon home, raises hm as a son, and is so proud when he joins the Police Academy. (I call this story "Officer Gibbon")

I hope your day is getting better with all these things people have posted.

*headdesk* Yes, clearly I'm a fan of too many procedurals because you are quite right. L&O: SVU. (And the much less gruesome spin-off, L&O: Officer Gibbon.)

I think Cragen retired, and Munch is the Captain now? I haven't watched in a while. (Oh, wow, now I'm thinking about the Munch in every universe thing, and how it's all a dream because of St Elsewhere.)

My sister-in-;aw got married this Saturday. It was a lovely day, the couple were gorgeous and happy, there were myriad kids running around being happy (the reception was at a vineyard and they'd booked a bouncy castle and an ice cream van), and it was a delightful day in every way. :)

Good thing: I took Friday off and rode up with my hockey friend to Niagara Falls and then Toronto for a hockey tournament. I got drafted onto the "Draftors" (eg, Toronto Raptors but with hockey sticks), and had a great time. We played 5 games in 2 days and went 2-1-2. And I drank a bunch of beer without having stomach issues!

The Phyllis Diller Gag File

Today I worked on part 4 of drawer 17 of Phyllis Diller's gag file at The Smithsonian transcription center. Organized by subject, these cards mostly dealt with religion. One 1969-70 joke was about buying a Mr. Christopher medal. Another joke involved kids' revisions to the Lord's Prayer ("Howard be thy name").

This blog post relates the story of how they acquired her gag file, including an image of her initial inquiry letter. "I am enclosing a bio in case you haven't heard of my work.... Even if I end up in the zoo or with the mammals, I will be honored." Most of the work has been done, but every once in a while they re-release another section to fill in the gaps left from the first round.

I like contributing to online projects ever since I found Distributed Proofreaders, which transcribes books to go up at Project Gutenberg. DP had a pretty supportive and somewhat cohesive community, and I wasn't the only person doing a couple of pages a day just to help make the world better. But then my laptop's hard drive died, and hardware issues pushed me away from DP. But the internet is a large and ever-expanding place, so I eventually found--

The University of Iowa's DIY History Project, which uses crowdsourcing to transcribe various types of historic documents. Flyers for feminist activities in the '70s! Diaries of white women settlers in the 1800s! Egg cards indexing one of the collections in their Natural History Museum!

I'm not sure how I heard about Project Zooniverse, but I found them a couple of years ago too. I've worked on a bunch of their projects ever since. Looking at images for stuff? Yah, I can do that. Looking at animals in warm climes during winter here? Absolutely!

So you can see that I like this kind of stuff. When a book titled Citizen Science [something something] popped up in the library system a few months ago, I put a hold on it. I read only a couple of chapters, but it was enough to introduce me to the Smithsonian's Transcription Center. So many projects; so little time! I've stuck mainly with projects that use smaller chunks, up to a typed page (art gallery correspondence from the 1930s and 1940s) or even index cards (Phyllis Diller!!! and the index to the Tropical Research Institute's vast collection of pollen on slides).*

*Some day, I will write with fewer parentheses. Today is not that day!
