Many Happy Returns of the Day ...

... to
[personal profile] peoppenheimer , he of extraordinarily rare appearances and extraordinarily rarefied mathematical and philosophical abilities, who celebrated on May 22. May you continue to be all that you are;

... to
[personal profile] lydy , who had a birthday on May 24, and who I have not seen for far too long. I hope she's attending Wiscon, which I think would be a great follow up to London. If she's not there, I hope she's enjoying post-Londinium decompression. She's rather brilliant, independent, radical, occasionally mulish, and all of those things are eminently admirable. May the next year be fantastic for you!

... to
[personal profile] sallymn , music lover, icon maker, fic writer, and genuinely nice person. I have many of your icons, I've enjoyed many of your musical recommendations - in fact, I enjoy interacting with you in many, many ways; I hope your birthday was a great one!

Hurrah for People Who Have Birthdays!

Back on May 5, the most estimable
[personal profile] jjpor  had a birthday, and I hope it was well celebrated. There are certain people that you wish you could meet in real life, and he's one of them. He's also one of the best writers of Who fanfic it's been my pleasure to read.  (And I'm sure he'll finish "Battlelines" Real Soon Now *cough*pleaseohpleaseohplease*cough*) I hope your birthday went well, and that the coming year will also go very well for you!

Moving forward a bit, to April 9, many delayed returns of the day to
[personal profile] calapine , whose stories I've enjoyed and who's now occasional posts have also made me smile over the years. I'm glad to see you an Dreamwidth, and hope to interact with you from time to time.

On May 10,
[personal profile] deathpixie , a fellow Canadian celebrated her birthday. I hope the coming year includes travel, if you want it; friends, happiness at work and at home, and I hope to see you occasionally, here on the Interwebz.

Finally, today is the birthday of the lovely
[personal profile] lost_spook , another of those people who I would love to meet in real life (and you'd best believe that once I've come into my fortune, I shall cross the ocean and take you out to tea!) You are a delight to know; you have a delicious sense of humor, both sharp and gentle; your writing is top notch; your love of all things old television opened up worlds to me - and, in line with that last, you gave me Sapphire and Steel (and Silver!) for which I can't thank you enough. Many happy returns of the day!

May this year have more joys than sorrows, may your dog be gentle, may life be easier for you, and may you look back on the next 12 months and smile. I'm glad I met you on the internet, and I hope to see more of you in the coming 365 days.

Delayed Natal Day Well-Wishes

With everything that's been helping keep me away from being a regular poster, several birthdays got lost in the mix.

Way back on March 28,
[personal profile] sensiblecat  had a birthday. I don't see this lovely individual around all that often these days; when I do, I'm always happy, because she's always had thoughtful and wonderfully chewy thoughts about Doctor Who. I hope her birthday was extra-specially good this year; perhaps we'll see more of you as the year progresses.

On March 31,
[personal profile] merryghoul  celebrated a birthday. She works hard on behalf of Doctor Who fans, helping put out Who Daily. She's a devoted fic writer, and someone who, like me, is a fan of both Clara and River Song. I hope your birthday was everything you wanted it to be!

On April Fool's Day,
[personal profile] sarah531  and [personal profile] purplefringe  — two people who definitely aren't fools — had birthdays. sarah531 loves several worlds within fandom, and I always enjoyed what she wrote. I hope to see her around as 2017 progresses. purplefringe is a gifted vid maker whose work never fails to satisfy. I hope both of them enjoyed their natal days.

On April 4, [livejournal.com profile] mizzlaurajean celebrated. She's smart, determined, a loving mom and wife, a citizen activist and a fan, all of which means she's an amazing person. Happy belated birthday to you!

Finally, on April 8, a long ago friendly fandom acquaintance,
[personal profile] mishalak (who took one of the loveliest snapshots of me ever), had a birthday. I hope it went well for him.

Sending Out Wishes ...

... into the Internet void, for the supremely gifted [livejournal.com profile] lyricwrites, who wrote some of the most powerful and beautiful Who fics it's ever been my pleasure to read (as well as a fantastic meta about Amy Pond's wedding that you should all go read, either for the first time or again.)  After being gifted with twins a few years ago (good lord, they should be about four years of age now - go you, amazing Mom!) she found other things to do than hang around on LJ. But I remember her with fondness and with more than a little awe from a writerly point of view. I hope you're doing well, wherever you are, and that someday you'll be back in these parts - and may your family have given you a birthday that was simply superb.

Happy Birthday to
[personal profile] maruad , a fellow Canadian. He's from the province and city where my Nana was born, and he, like me, is a science fiction fan. There's two points of congruence, but they aren't necessary for me to enjoy knowing him. He has a wry sense of humor, a good eye for art (he's also a dab hand at painting himself), and in short, has always been a pleasure to know. I hope today was a good day for you!

A second birthday person is [livejournal.com profile] jessalrynn, and I am very glad I've had the chance to meet her via pixels, if not in real life. She is an excellent writer, and she shares my love of the Ninth Doctor, of the Whoniverse from First to Twelfth, of democracy, of resistance to tyranny, and deserves the best birthday, and the best year possible. I hope 2017 is good for you!
kaffyr: (My Doctor)
Two Lovely People

Happy birthday, one day late, to the talented [livejournal.com profile] wendymr, who was one of the first Dr. Who fic writers I ever read, and whose work ,therefore, convinced me that fic - of which I'd heard very little - could be quality writing. I like to think she helped me become a better writer in Who fandom, because of her gentle, but firm, Britpicking. We may not agree on eggnog or Steven Moffat, but we do agree that the Doctor in general is fanTAStic! We also agree on many things political and labor/labour-related, and I am very glad to have met her on These Here Intarwebz. I hope your birthday was a fine one, and that your 2017 is equally excellent!

Happy birthday, too, to the very delightful
[personal profile] marence  (again, one day late.) She is not around here these days, but I like to think that she'll get some good vibes from Chicago. It would be delightful to see her again some day, to chat about rock and roll and fandom. I hope her birthday was a good one.
kaffyr: (We used to dream)
Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] lyricalviolet!

I should send you a birthday greeting on FB, which is where you hang out most these days. And I should keep in contact more often, which is something i say every year around this time. I'm bad at it - I'm sure you've noticed. I should be a better friend.  It's been a long time since we talked the art, science, and frustration of fic writing, or fangirled about Who or BSG. In fact, your life has moved on from those days - you have a family that includes one of the cutest little red-heads I've seen in a long time.

But I'll always remember that you were one of the people who impressed me with her wit, and bravery, and creativity, all those years ago on TWoP, in LINDA. And I'll always be grateful to you for urging me on when I began writing fiction again, after decades away from it. I remember our efforts to bring back Jacob's Who recaps on TWoP - and we were kind of successful at that, weren't we?

You deserve a fantastic life, and I know you're having one. I'll drop by FB to say happy birthday one day late - but I grew to know you and cherish you far from FB, so this is where my birthday wish stands. All the best, my dear.

Moar Birthdays - Hurrah!

Today, the giraffe-wary [livejournal.com profile] pitry celebrates her birthday. May it be free of the long-necked menaces, and full of all the things you'd like a birthday to feature, including cake, (if wanted); friends (as many as are comfortable, especially if they foot the bill); and happiness (ALL the happiness!) Natal salutations and celebrations!

Today is also a birthday for [livejournal.com profile] amberfocus, and I wish her the very best; I hope life with family is wonderful throughout 2017; I hope your muse, for both original fiction and fic, remains active, and that you have all the energy you want to create in both fields. Happy Birthday!

Birthdays! Birthdays! Many Birthdays!

Yes, it's been a long time since I posted. It's also been a long time since I've responded to others' posts, which is really sad, because I've rolled past a lot of fascinating posts this past week, posts where people have talked about interesting political or literary issues, neat books they've read, or provided links to interesting stories that I've not investigated, talked about interesting fic events, updated people on their personal lives, and so much more. All those wonderful things and people that I didn't have the spoons to investigate ....

So it's Saturday now, and sometimes the best way to get back on the motorbike, the horse, or the broom is to wish people happy belated birthdays, which I will now do, because birthdays are worth celebrating - hey, everyone who has a birthday is still here, enriching the world!

On Jan. 31,
[personal profile] flowsoffire  celebrated a birthday. I wish both she and I were around more to interact here, because she is really a pure delight. I'm in awe of her language abilities, I think her writing's cool, and I like getting a little window into her corner of the world - but most of all, I like her. I hope your day was a good one!

On Feb. 2 [livejournal.com profile] nucleosides celebrated a birthday, and I hope it was exactly the type of birthday she wanted. She's strong, and patient, and she's determined to create the best life ever for the two little ones she loves. She also likes the Ninth Doctor, which I think is evidence of her eminent good taste. May this coming year be good to you!

On Feb. 4, [livejournal.com profile] beccadg celebrated her birthday. I'm sorry your birthday was on Superbowl Sunday - that sucks. I like knowing someone who also likes The Heroic Legend of Arslan (I'm still chuffed at the icons you gave me!) May your life over the next 365 days be happier and more fulfilling than expected, and filled with friends and love.

On Feb. 8,
[personal profile] harvey_rrit  became another year older - I hope the celebration was exactly what he wanted. He and I inhabit vastly different sections of the political rainbow, but perhaps the point of a rainbow is to be a rainbow. He is also far funnier than I am, and that's worth a lot. Plus, the tin dog is pretty awesome. I hope you have an excellent 2017.

Also on Feb. 8, the lovely
[personal profile] scripsi  celebrated a birthday. She deserves an excellent natal celebration, so I hope her friends and family gave her exactly that! I am glad we share so many of the same interests (the Doctor, of course, but also music and fan fiction, and I am so glad to have met you on the Internet!

Happy Birthday (on the 20th, oh my god, I'm late, I'm late) [livejournal.com profile] apostle_of_eris! I am very glad I know you. You enrich my intellectual life, add laughter to my days, and are, in general, a most admirable creature. May this year be a good one for you, despite everything that it may bring!

Happy Birthday to All of You

Back on Nov. 26, [livejournal.com profile] othermewriter had her birthday. It's been a long time since she's been around, but I hope she's doing well. I always liked her appreciation of Donna and the Ninth Doctor, and it would be lovely to see her again around these parts. Many happy returns of the day to you!

Just yesterday, the long-vanished
[personal profile] lonewytch  celebrated her birthday. She is an Eleven and River fangirl, and has written lovely fiction and elegant, thought-provoking meta. I miss seeing her here and I hope her life has been full of good things. May it also be full of good things in the year to come.

Today ... today is the birthday of the long-absent (oops; I'm beginning to see a pattern here)
[personal profile] spiderine , who I always enjoyed reading for her well-written and often unnerving fic - from Torchwood to MCU Cinematic and Who in general - as well as for her trenchant, often creatively profane, and always well-considered commentary on the world. I hope she is doing well, and that she could observe her birthday with a smile, and with friends.

Finally, I can wish Happy Birthday to the quite present (hurrah!)
[personal profile] azalaisdep . After a bit of an absence, this lovely person has returned, talking about the small things that make her happy, and that, in turn, makes me happy (and many others, I suspect.) She has written wonderful LotR fic, and is, all in all, a tiny bit of a treasure. Happy Birthday to you!

Happy Delayed Birthday to Two Wonderful People

Years ago now, I met two lovely young women on TWoP; fellow Doctor Who fans, fellow science fiction fans, and fellow genre television fans.

More than that, however, they were lovers of language, and people of faith. They combined those two things and have found a mission, and a path. I don't share their faith, but I'm proud to know people who live theirs.

I hope your Nov. 24 birthdays were very good ones; I wish the coming year treats you well - all the best, [livejournal.com profile] mack_the_knife and [livejournal.com profile] namarie24!

Many, Many Happy Returns, [personal profile] kerravonsen !

Your birthday was on Nov. 11, and I hope your Remembrance Day (at least that's what we called it in Canada) was a happy one, whether than meant quiet cheer, raucous friends, close and loving family, or a mix of all three. You are a talented writer, a craftswoman with the self discipline to put beautiful things together with your hands, an adventurer in ice cream, a science fiction and fantasy fan, and so much more.

You are a person of faith, who tries to live by the tenets of her faith, and who thinks about that faith as she does so. That's a rare thing in my experience. Even though there are places where we hold very different views, I think you are a force for good in the universe - you have certainly brightened my little part in it, and have offered comfort on those days when I've felt lowest. If I ever get down to your corner of the world, I hope we can sit and talk; I'd consider it a particular joy.

May the coming year be a good one for you!

Before the Election Madness Takes Me Over ...

I want to wish a late, but very sincere, birthday wish to [livejournal.com profile] cathica, a gifted writer, and one of the only writers of fine, distilled horror whose work draws me, a confirmed horror-avoider, in. She writes with humanity, and with an eye to both the pure and the twisted ways we love and live. I first saw her skill in her Doctor Who fanfic, and it was a rare pleasure to get to know her a tiny bit more via the occasional letter and postcard. She sent me a journal to write in, and I still find the time to write in it! To you, excellent writer, kind person and opponent of bears, I raise a glass, and wish for you in the coming year.

Two Remarkable Women

Because I will be late for my own funeral, I have missed the birthdays of two remarkable women, and I want to correct that right now.

On Friday,
[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon  celebrated her Benny Birthday, and I hope she was surrounded by love throughout the day. My dear, you are a force of nature, you have more energy in your little finger than I have in my entire body, you are fierce, and funny, and kind, and bone-deep hungry for life, for learning, for understanding this world and its inhabitants better. All that you have gained in this world, you have gotten because of your own huge heart and gloriously, mulishly stubborn resistance to standing still, or becoming stagnant. You are creative during times when I'd curl up in a ball and twitch, you are loving and generous in situations where I'd shoot someone, you are humble but determined not to stop trying to make your life better. You're like a weeble, you know; you wobble, but you don't fall down. Let's hope we can get together; I'll make curry for us all, and you can make your legendary pasta sauce. In the meantime, keep being your extraordinary self, and know that I adore you, and want you to have your best year yet.  Happy Birthday!

And far across the Atlantic,
[personal profile] elisi  has been celebrating her birthday with Mr. Darcy and their daughters. I hope your birthday has been magnificent, in just the right shade of magnificence you desire, whether that be quiet or raucous. You are one of the first people who introduced me to the idea that one could look at one's fandom love in a way that takes squee beyond squee, into depth of thought. You are both insightful and incisive; you provoke thoughts in those with whom you speak (I know this from first hand experience.) Your influence is such that, when I watch something that I know we both love, my first thought is "I must see what elisi thinks."  When I write, one of my first thoughts is "Does this rise to elisi's standards?" Not to mention, you have a puckish sense of humor that you let out on just the right occasions; you care deeply about the world - you are, in short, someone that I am so very glad to have met on the Internet. Here's to many, many more discussions (at least that don't involve four-letter alphabet soup personality modalities; I leave that to you, Owls, and Proton.) Happy Birthday!

I hope you're around somewhere, and that your birthday yesterday was a good one! I always enjoy reading posts from you, because you're a thoughtful, observant, and kind person. I wish there were more people like you in the world, and I hope that the coming year is a good one for you.

And then they won last night. I can't think of a nicer thing to watch as your birthday came to an end yesterday. So many happy returns of the day to a Cubs fan, a fanfic fan, a yarn fan, an SF&F fan, and a very lovely person. Happy, Happy, to Many, Many

It's been quite the week; quite the non-communicative week. But it's Friday, BB and I are about two hours away from heading out to the Beat Kitchen to hear FB and his first band get back together for a 15-year reunion show - yes, it's a midnight show, and yes, we know we're too damned old for this sort of thing, but we're doing it anyway ... and it's time to catch up with the lovely people I know who have had a number of birthdays over the last little while.

Happy birthday, to
[personal profile] rmjwell , ex-Chicagoan, who I expect is watching the first came of the Cubs v Giants tonight; he's a very wise man, a connoisseur of burlesque, a dad, and a fan - quite the package! He celebrated a birthday on Oct. 4, and I hope the birthday was wonderful. (I also hope he gets a great World Series birthday, but I'm not going to jinx anything by saying any more.)

Happy birthday to
[personal profile] supergee , another very wise man. There are some very, very, very rare occasions where I don't agree with you. Very, very, very rare (and almost always in terms of musical tastes). I am lucky to know someone who is funny, smart, perceptive, and kind. I hope your birthday, which took place Oct. 6, was a good one, and I hope the coming year is a good one for you.

Speaking of kind and smart, the lovely [livejournal.com profile] heatherbelles also celebrated on Oct. 6. She is a scholar of history, a specialist in museum displays, a Dr. Who fan, a gardener, and a totally worthwhile human being. You're not often around here, but I hope you know that I'm wishing you a delayed birthday; I am very glad I met you over on TWoP, and maybe, once I win that Great Big Lottery, I can cross the pond and meet you in person!

kaffyr: Twelve busses River! (Happy River and Twelve!)
To [personal profile] promethia_tenk

Your birthday was yesterday, and I hope it was an extraordinarily good one.

You are one of the reasons that I love fandom. You love the telling of tales, all kinds of tales, in so many ways. You're curious, wryly and acutely observant, interpreting and reinterpreting what you see and hear, exploring what it means and why you love it - and you encourage that in others, just by dint of the joy you take in the process. That's the best of fannish behavior, right there. You're a pleasure to talk to, to laugh with, to meditate upon things with. You've made my own ruminations on the fandoms we share more rewarding.

You are, in short, an admirable and lovely person, and I am very glad we are acquainted. Someday it would be a joy to meet you. Until then, just continue being awesome, and have a great year!

Happy Birthday [personal profile] strannik01 !

It's a delayed birthday wish, but I definitely want to send it, to a fellow Chicago area journalist and astute observer of the area's political and social milieu, and someone whose gently acerbic ruminations on both are always a pleasure to read. Knowing someone who is part of two of my worlds - fandom and reporting - is a wonderful privilege. Glad I "know" you!

Things, Things, Things
  • I apologize to all the wonderful people - including my own beloved BB - whose July and August birthdays I've failed to acknowledge. I hope you all had excellent natal days; I think all of you help improve my world, and you're lovely in general. I'm glad I've gotten to know all of you via the Internet.
  • I listened to a radio interview tonight done a few years ago with a woman who translated Rainer Maria Rilke, and who was pretty interesting in and of herself; worked for the CIA in Germany in the 1950s, became a buddhist monk after meeting Tibetan refugees (including the young Dalai Lama) while being part of one of the first Peace Corps families in India, as well as being an early environmentalist. Can I remember her name? Of course not.  Now I want to read Rilke's poetry. I've only read a few bits, and loved them.
  • I want to write about why The Goblin Emperor is my comfort food novel. I think I've read it four times already, and I think I know why. But some of the reasons might sound disrespectful to Sarah Monette, who wrote it under the pseudonym Katherine Addison. They aren't; they are, in my mind, one of the reasons I think her writing is marvelous. But still ... can I put it all together well? I don't know.
  • Less than a month before BB and I head to Canada to celebrate my step-dad's birthday. I can hardly wait - I'm looking at things to do, like a wine-tasting at Grand Pre, maybe some theater in Halifax, dinner with friends in Wolfville ... augh; I don't know. But it's our first big blow-out vacation in years, and I want to come back to Chicago remembering it with great joy.
  • I've taken to listening to "ancient" music - stuff from the Baroque period and before, which I've mentioned before. It's very soothing.
  • My right hand is starting to stiffen up again, after a few years of really good recovery from the initial attack of RA and scleroderma. And my stomach is giving me rather constant troubles. Not sure what to do about the first thing, but I'm looking forward to my Aug. 25 visit with my gastroenterologist to talk about the second thing.
  • Had back spasms Friday and some of the weekend. Kept me out of work Friday. That'll teach me to lay off my back exercises.
  • FB and Miss Emily got back from their trip; it was good to have them home, and to welcome Emily into the family with a hug. (No, they're not married yet, but as far as I'm concerned, she's part of the family now.)

And I think that's about all I can think of for now.

This Is Not a Post

Really, folks. It isn't. It's more to say I'm alive, and that I actually intend to continue conversing with people on my last post - I'm not ignoring anyone, I just haven't had the intellectual vigor to follow up with a couple of folks.

It's not a post, because if it were a post, I'd have said Happy Birthday,
[personal profile] gerisullivan !! You're an amazing, creative, smiling, disciplined, fannish force of nature, and I'm very glad I know you! May the 2016-2017 year be a good for you, and may we see more of each other soon.

It's not a post, because I might say a whole bunch of things about the fire-struck oil-slick that is the RNC. I've been watching it at a remove, by following Twitter. I tried watching one of the early speeches and it raised my blood pressure enough to make me turn off the television.

It's not a post because every single day seems to unleash some awful bit of violence here and abroad - on top of the unending violence and despair in Syria and Iraq, in Somalia, in other places that are just as real as my home, against people who don't deserve it. And I don't have the spoons to consider it.

It's not a post, because it's too damned hot. And the old break in my foot aches from the mugginess. And I'm worried about Alex, the senior ginger partner of our feline triad. He's been throwing up almost every day. I removed any bit of milk from his diet (we used to give him a little bit of milk as a treat on a too-regular basis.) I'm hoping that will help.

It's not a post because - wait, I can say that I'm almost done one more IOU

To
[personal profile] laurel , who I first met at a Minicon music party, and who I immediately liked because she was cool, happy birthday! You introduced me to the internet, and were the first person I knew who used the word "blog." You are a cat lover par excellence, and you can judge quality television like some oonophiles judge fine wine. It's been a long time since we last saw each other, and I hope a time comes when we can get reacquainted in the three-dee world. Until then - may your birthday (back on July 5, yes, I missed it, ack) signal a year in which life becomes easier, better, and more rewarding for you than you could even hope for.
