Taking the Plunge

I've decided that I'm going to start uploading Hearts & Moons to AO3, something I've avoided to date. I'll upload one chapter every 4-5 days to start (although I may do the prologue and first chapter at the same time), and I'll try to time the uploads so that the story will be finished by the time I reach Chapter 26.

I made the decision because I've now got two completed chapters, 26 and 27, in the hopper, and the chapter I believe to be the penultimate one, Chapter 28, is somewhere between one-third and one-half completed. After that, there's either one final chapter or a very hefty epilogue.

I think there are enough completed chapters that doing a relatively slow but steady stream of chapters to AO3 will keep me going on the writing front.* After all, I'm already in the "I have to take a break from my Real World work to get another couple of paragraphs written or edited on this story" stage of writing. That bite at the base of my brain (or possibly in my gut) won't lift until the chapter is finished, and once 28 is done, I'll be able to see the route to the exit door, as it were.

So, yeah, taking the plunge, with upload work starting tonight. Wish me luck.

*And if you haven't started reading the story because it's a WIP, you can at least consider starting to read it over on AO3, trusting that things will be finished by the time you reach what is currently the end. If that makes sense.)

  • Get more fic writing done - although here, I can say that I've gotten the first half of Chapter 27 of Hearts and Moons completed, which means I"ll soon have two completed chapter to post, and only 1.5 or 2 more chapters to go. But I remember her with fondness and with more than a little awe from a writerly point of view. Happy Birthday to
[personal profile] maruad , a fellow Canadian. He's from the province and city where my Nana was born, and he, like me, is a science fiction fan. There's two points of congruence, but they aren't necessary for me to enjoy knowing him. He has a wry sense of humor, a good eye for art (he's also a dab hand at painting himself), and in short, has always been a pleasure to know. I hope today was a good day for you!

A second birthday person is [livejournal.com profile] jessalrynn, and I am very glad I've had the chance to meet her via pixels, if not in real life. She is an excellent writer, and she shares my love of the Ninth Doctor, of the Whoniverse from First to Twelfth, of democracy, of resistance to tyranny, and deserves the best birthday, and the best year possible. I hope 2017 is good for you!

Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness, The Ninth Doctor
Words: 3,382
Summary:  Why do I always get these rubbish mental pictures at the worst possible times? Rose Tyler learns the crucial art of defensive silliness.
Author's note: After a month or so spent lamenting my inability to write stories for the one fic event in which I take part,
[community profile] fandom_stocking , this story happened. Alas, fandom_stocking 2016 is now in the rear-view mirror, but the story is done. If you, like me, would love to have Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness action figures, because you know that the Doctor needs his own personal SWAT team from time to time, you might enjoy this. These are my OT3, and one or two sentences in the story reflect that. One can blithely ignore those and see them as simply friends.

Author's note: This is for the lovely
[personal profile] lost_spook , written for the 2016 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. I almost consider it cheating, when I get to write for her, because I don't think I'll ever thank her enough for introducing me to Sapphire & Steel or to one of the more unusual friendships of which I've become incredibly fond. This is a great article, especially when you consider the writer apparently either doesn't know much about JB, or is writing the piece for people he knows doesn't know much about JB. And JB comes across, once again, as a real sweetheart.

kaffyr: Twelve busses River! (Happy River and Twelve!)
To [personal profile] promethia_tenk

Your birthday was yesterday, and I hope it was an extraordinarily good one.

You are one of the reasons that I love fandom. You love the telling of tales, all kinds of tales, in so many ways. You're curious, wryly and acutely observant, interpreting and reinterpreting what you see and hear, exploring what it means and why you love it - and you encourage that in others, just by dint of the joy you take in the process. That's the best of fannish behavior, right there. You're a pleasure to talk to, to laugh with, to meditate upon things with. You've made my own ruminations on the fandoms we share more rewarding.

You are, in short, an admirable and lovely person, and I am very glad we are acquainted. Someday it would be a joy to meet you. Until then, just continue being awesome, and have a great year!

Summary: For Jo Grant, The Year That Never Was started with a sorrowful flight up Brazil's Rio Negro, and continued with a year-long struggle to keep people alive.  When she met Martha Jones and heard of her travels across the globe, she was driven to help.
Author's Note: This was written, with a great deal of affection, for
[personal profile] scripsi , in the 2015 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. She admitted to a love of Jo Grant and the Master. While I didn't think I could do justice to Delgado!Master, I share her love of Jo, who is an underestimated Companion with a ready smile, a quick wit, and a spine of steel hidden underneath her gentle seeming. I thought about what Jo might have done during The Year That Never Was — a thought that dovetailed nicely with my musings on how Martha Jones might have made her way around the world. This story is the result.

Words: 1,497
Summary: The art of misdirection is a magician's best skill. Occasionally it comes in handy for galactic time travelers — but when misdirection involves costume changes, the eventual result can be ... revealing. A tale from the Ninth Doctor's time with Rose Tyler and Captain Jack Harkness.
Author's Note: I wrote this criminally delayed fandom_stocking 2015 story for
[personal profile] jessalrynn , who likes the Ninth Doctor and Rose, and likes Jack as well. She said one of her enjoyments was in-character humor so I wrote this exceedingly silly piece of ever-so-slightly risque fluff in hopes that it would tickle her funnybone in the right way.

Title: A Vein of Silver
Author: [personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Doctor Who, Sapphire and Steel
Characters: Liz Shaw, Silver, the Third Doctor, Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart
Words: 4,083
Summary: Let the wall be built, the stranger said; Dr. Liz Shaw considers her options in a laboratory where something's gone wrong with Time.
Author's note: This was written with a great deal of affection for [personal profile] lost_spook  (and a great deal of nervous second-guessing on the author's part) for the 2015 Fandom Stocking fun. She it was who introduced me to Sapphire and Steel, she it was who instilled in me the understanding that Elements are not human, but that Silver and Dr. Elizabeth Shaw might be an excellent pairing. (Perhaps something like fine, albeit very odd, wine, one supposes ....) NOTE: for those for whom it could affect their enjoyment, there is an exceedingly brief moment of mild violence near the end; no one's agency is taken away and there are no injuries, but it should be noted. ONE FINAL NOTE: This takes place slightly later in Silver's timeline than my story "The Bright Side of Time," but considerably earlier in the Doctor's timeline.
Edited by: My poor self alone. It has been read and re-read rather obsessively, but any remaining misspellings, mistakes, and missteps are solely mine.

Well, Damn. He's Leaving.

I'm a Doctor Who fan, which means I am — or should be — used to, and understanding of, the inevitable changes that come with the show. Doctors, Companions, even TARDISes, they all change. Writers come and go, as do directors. So do producers, that old-fashioned name for show-runners.

And today, I learned that my favorite Doctor Who show-runner, Steven Moffat has put in his papers, and will be leaving at the end of 2017.

Damn. Double-damn.

My disappointment and love, let me show you them )

As I

That's really all I can title my day, or my post (why is it that I insist on titling my posts, I wonder?) For I did little more today than a) make my holiday card list, b) rewatch the Zygon Invasion and Inversion, and Face the Raven with my First Born, who'd specifically asked me to help him catch up with the season - and go out to get some meds, and some gin.

Note that I have, quite manfully, resisted making some sort of bad joke about meds and gin being sought on the same trip.

It's Friday!!!!

So, first off? The Best Friday Song EVARRRR. Which I will probably intermittently re-post because it always makes the end of the work week particularly wonderful.

Second: I hope everyone is doing well, as November gets ready to start its slide toward December. I'd love to hear what folks are doing.

Third: Much to my own surprise, I actually was able to buy two little Christmas gifts for two friends, and that pleases me inordinately. I bought them from a small independent store, and that pleased me even more. Most of my gifts this year will be donations in peoples' names to various charities, but it's always great to find a little something personal.

Fourth: I was, for the firs time this season, truly disappointed with a Doctor Who episode. "Sleep No More" was, for me, boring, despite a lot of sound and fury; both gormless and formless (something that I've found to be the case with most other Mark Gatiss scripts) and a waste of a lot of nice background world-building. To take an intrinsically interesting idea (lack of sleep and what that does for individuals and their society) and squander it so completely ... it would be a shame in any Dr. Who season, but this season has been, for me, so uniformly good that "Sleep No More" is particularly unsatisfying. Mediocrity, thy name appears upon too many occasions to be Gatiss. I still like "The Unquiet Dead" and "Robots of Sherwood" though.

I am fighting a slightly upset stomach, and gearing up to do my exercises; the stomach might not be a good thing for the exercises - we shall see.

Onward, to Big Ass Martini time!
