Taking the Plunge

I've decided that I'm going to start uploading Hearts & Moons to AO3, something I've avoided to date. I'll upload one chapter every 4-5 days to start (although I may do the prologue and first chapter at the same time), and I'll try to time the uploads so that the story will be finished by the time I reach Chapter 26.

I made the decision because I've now got two completed chapters, 26 and 27, in the hopper, and the chapter I believe to be the penultimate one, Chapter 28, is somewhere between one-third and one-half completed. After that, there's either one final chapter or a very hefty epilogue.

I think there are enough completed chapters that doing a relatively slow but steady stream of chapters to AO3 will keep me going on the writing front.* After all, I'm already in the "I have to take a break from my Real World work to get another couple of paragraphs written or edited on this story" stage of writing. That bite at the base of my brain (or possibly in my gut) won't lift until the chapter is finished, and once 28 is done, I'll be able to see the route to the exit door, as it were.

So, yeah, taking the plunge, with upload work starting tonight. Wish me luck.

*And if you haven't started reading the story because it's a WIP, you can at least consider starting to read it over on AO3, trusting that things will be finished by the time you reach what is currently the end. If that makes sense.)

I've finished Chapter 26 of Hearts and Moons. After *thinks* more than a year.

I'm writing this with as few exclamation points as possible, in order to be as maturely pleased with myself as possible. But please imagine the entire post littered with the little things.

I'm not going to post it yet. I'd actually like to get another chapter done, so that I can post them consecutively.

I'm so close to the finish I can taste it, folks.

Ten years. GRRM levels of slowness (at least in the realm of fic. Don't worry, I'm not comparing myself to him.) And maybe the end in sight?

As I said.

If you, like me, would love to have Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness action figures, because you know that the Doctor needs his own personal SWAT team from time to time, you might enjoy this.  A [community profile] fandom_stocking  Apology

Folks, for the first time since 2011, when  I fell in love with
[community profile] fandom_stocking  - the only "-athon" I write for, and the one that has given me such joy - I am most probably not going to be able to fill anyone's stocking.

When I signed up myself, I was full of plans; I'd just finished the last two promised 2015 stocking stuffers, and I'd thought that had primed my creative pump. And, as I always do each season, I thought perhaps this was the year that I could focus on drabbles, or at least shorter stories. Plus, I had my vacation coming up, and I'd be able to write something every day ....

Yeah. Didn't happen. I can't even figure out definitively why, although last night I told BB it might be that finishing up those 2015 stories had, instead of priming the pump, run the well dry. God knows, this has been a terrible writing year for me; it's the first time since 2007 that I haven't been able to get at least one chapter of Hearts & Moons completed.

The events of November also have affected me, perhaps more deeply than even I thought.

Yesterday, the day before my vacation ended, I suddenly wrote two paragraphs of something, and I thought, "Aha! Adrenaline junkie time! You can at least get two stories done before my vacation, and perhaps a third one before the stockings go live ....

And then this morning, I burned my left index finger, ironing a shirt. It's bandaged up now, and doesn't hurt too much, but the bandage makes typing incredibly frustrating. I'm down from 80-plus words a minute to, I don't know, 30-40, what with having to fix up mistakes. GAAAAAAaarrrhh!

tl;dr - after burbling about
[community profile] fandom_stocking , and looking forward to it, I don't think I can take part. I don't say it can't happen. Anything can happen, of course, and one never shuts the door, but - and there's an end to the sentence.

Perhaps next year more of us can hang stockings, and I can fill all of them.

*sighs, heads off to the grocery store*

Which should give me a chance to:

1. Decorate the tree that's been standing, nude, in our livingroom for the past two days. Late start, anyone?
2. Finish my holiday cards. I got 19 out this week and if I can get the same number done tomorrow, people will get them before ... uh ... New Year's? Maybe?
3. Tell the story of Andy's tale of woe - stolen guitar, smashed car window - which then turned into an honest-to-god Christmas tale of loveliness.
4. Wrap presents.
5. Cook a goose.
6. Write ALL THE FIC for
[community profile] fandom_stocking . (I have a stocking up myself, and here it is, but that's not quite as important as WRITING ALL THE FIC.)

More, later, after I've decompressed into holiday cheer. Oh, and a martini

This Is Not a Post

Really, folks. It isn't. It's more to say I'm alive, and that I actually intend to continue conversing with people on my last post - I'm not ignoring anyone, I just haven't had the intellectual vigor to follow up with a couple of folks.

It's not a post, because if it were a post, I'd have said Happy Birthday,
[personal profile] gerisullivan !! You're an amazing, creative, smiling, disciplined, fannish force of nature, and I'm very glad I know you! May the 2016-2017 year be a good for you, and may we see more of each other soon.

It's not a post, because I might say a whole bunch of things about the fire-struck oil-slick that is the RNC. I've been watching it at a remove, by following Twitter. I tried watching one of the early speeches and it raised my blood pressure enough to make me turn off the television.

It's not a post because every single day seems to unleash some awful bit of violence here and abroad - on top of the unending violence and despair in Syria and Iraq, in Somalia, in other places that are just as real as my home, against people who don't deserve it. And I don't have the spoons to consider it.

It's not a post, because it's too damned hot. And the old break in my foot aches from the mugginess. And I'm worried about Alex, the senior ginger partner of our feline triad. He's been throwing up almost every day. I removed any bit of milk from his diet (we used to give him a little bit of milk as a treat on a too-regular basis.) I'm hoping that will help.

It's not a post because - wait, I can say that I'm almost done one more IOU
[community profile] fandom_stocking  fic. Yes! Something positive!

And now I'm going to bed.

Author's Note: This story has been sitting, half completed, for well over a year, but I finally realized how it should end only recently. I Aten't Dead, Mostly

I was supposed to be at a new board meeting tonight, but I'm feeling like crap, and realized it was a migraine (and possibly a cold that started creeping up on me at a meeting I covered last night. So I'm more or less on the couch, feeling miserable, after eating supper, and I realized it's been almost two weeks since I actually posted anything here. So ... well ....

... I'm here.

I have a fic to post, which might go up tonight. Maybe. If I feel like it. Augh. I still have two more fandom_stocking IOUs to complete, but this isn't one of them.

I wanted to re-read a particularly powerful and well-written piece of fiction by
[personal profile] ljgeoff  (hi, my dear!), but my eyes and brain aren't allowing me to do that with the care I want to lavish on it. Instead, I'll send wishes for quick healing.

I wanted to tell the story of how the remarkable
[personal profile] gerisullivan  helped pass along a tradition of earrings to me, after hearing about the loss of my favorite earrings in Cleveland. Really recount the event the delight and joy it deserves, I mean, because she is such a marvelously creative and overall remarkable human being. But I don't have the spoon, except to say, Geri, you rock, and I'm still enthusing about your gift to me, all these days later.

I have emails to send out to our unit owners and renters about a water problem that needs to be fixed on Friday. I have to chase after one of the people I represented two weeks ago in a discipline hearing, to see if he can make it to his first stage grievance hearing next week. But right now, I still hurt too bad to do anything more than post here.

I want to continue reading Paul Cornell's latest dark fantasy police procedural, "Who Killed Sherlock Holmes," which is on its way to being just as good, and scary, as the two previous books. But I can't read much.

I thought I might comment on the Dems and GOPs as they flounder and founder prior to their national conventions. But I have not the heart to do so.

I may go and lie down in the dark. Or I may lie here in the living room and chat, slowly, with BB. Not sure which.

So how are all of you?

Words: 4,394
Summary: A tale in which Clint Barton and Natasha Romanov learn that they really should have been better apprised by Phil Coulson about the 20 percent crazy stuff from UNIT’s files.
Author's Note:This is another criminally delayed [community profile] fandom_stocking story, this one for the very patient
[personal profile] beccadg . She enjoys both Doctor Who and the Marvel Cinematic Universe; I hope she enjoys this crossover. I placed it in the Rembrandt Hotel, which I remember fondly from a 1979 visit to England, although it is, I understand, quite updated from its 1979 layout. NOTE: This story takes place in 2013 — before the events of Captain America: the Winter Soldier — but after the death of Danny Pink in Clara’s and the Doctor’s personal timelines. It also posits a relationship between Clint, Phil and Natasha, one undertaken with the knowledge, affection and respect of and for Laura Barton, who is awesome, and who, I think, looks to Phil and Natasha to keep Clint safe. And possibly in line as well.

Happy May Day, Now That It's Almost Over

I had a wonderful evening with BB last night. I enjoyed all the lovely bubbly I had (3 tulip's worth, which probably isn't all that much.)

What I didn't enjoy is the hangover I had. From three glasses of asti spumante. I am so very, very old.

I can't understand why I don't get any kind of hangover from a gin martini or two, and suffer quite noticeably with the wine.

Finally, Some Relaxation

I'm sitting on the laundromat, washing the coverlet that one of the cats puked on (which is too large for our home washer), trying to dry off - it's been pouring cold rain much of the day - and recovering, not only from my earlier trip to Costco, but from two weeks of nonstop activity.

I slept past noon today, which I apparently needed to do. Last night I went to a gathering of former (and current, of course) Pioneer people. It was a good evening; I ran into a woman who'd been an ad rep back in the first years I'd been with the company, back in 1983-84. We were both hired by Rocky, and we realized we probably went back further (farther? I can't remember) than anyone else there. I'd always liked her, and it turned out she'd always liked me; something that's always good to learn.

I had to tell her about Rocky and Nick, while she had to let me know about the recent death of another old original, Lou Rubino, who'd managed our back shop. Getting old rather mandates those jobs, but it's always sad. I was very touched when she said she'd always thought of Nick and I as a team - perceptive woman - and that she'd respected what she called our passionate dedication to journalistic ethics. We didn't think "ad side" noticed. Silly us.

As I sit here, BB is going over the MCU/who crossover I just finished as a delayed fandom_stocking story. It topped 4,000 words because I can't do short, apparently.

And tonight is steak, bubbly, BB, and more relaxation.

I am grateful.

My editor, let me praise her. She's a good editor. I really like her.

The first MCU fic is edging toward 3,000 words. I wish I could wrap it up faster than I'm going to be able to.

Have I mentioned lately that I love The Expanse? Have I mentioned how it manages to be as close to realistic hard science fiction as one can get, while still telling a multi-pronged and gripping story filled with real three-dee characters, a complicated and fascinating political plot, and thoughtful social extrapolations? I have? Well, you'll probably hear me gush over the series again. We've just watched the sixth episode in the first 10-episode season, and I am very glad that it got renewed by SyFy.

I am grateful that today I saw a cardinal (male, in all his red glory) on the greensward across the street from my window.
