To my cat-loving Chicago area f'list

It's public service announcement time!

My next door neighbor, who is a wonderful soul with a beautiful smile and a heart approximately the size of Wisconsin, rescues cats upon occasion, cares for them and then finds good homes for them where possible. Mostly recently, one of the cats she is caring for gave birth to kittens, requiring her to expand her "Got Kitties?" message circle.

Here's the message she sent out to her friends; I've redacted her phone number, but included a picture of one of the cuties involved. If you or anyone you know are interested in a) helping a wonderful woman and b) having one or two balls of bright-eyed sweetness in your life, PM me and I'll give you her phone number.

"Hello everyone; born the end of June, two kitten siblings, one B/W male (aka Napoleon) and a tiger striped female (aka Fluffy) are ready to bust, once again, out of the bathroom into a good home. They got a clean bill of health from Treehouse this past Thursday, are healthy (thankfully both FIV, FeLuk negative), are neutered and have gotten vaccinations and are ID chipped. I'm hoping to adopt them together."

Hmm,. I know not this cheese cake of which you speak**, but that lovely mouse-cake is cheeseless IIRC! It was the work of my bestie|proxy-younger-sister, who made every last part of it from scratch - the cake, the fondant-and-marzipan-and-ganache mice and faux cherry in the centre - from scratch earlier this year as a project to fight depression. Purty, innit?

** Only joshing - I do know what cheesecake is and I detest it with a screaming passion. Greasy slimy fatty gooey eww! I'm a 'lemon meringue tart plz and definitely no cream or ice-cream on it kthx' person :-)

Hmm. Well, I'm a total sucker for skim-milk fruit yoghurts (especially our own homemades), and I looooves me custard (again, made with skim), so it's more a matter of not being a dairy-based fatty sweets kind of person. I love cheeses as well but have to be very careful because the love isn't mutual, though I readily admit to having occasional cheese-fests in the resigned, no-wiser-with-experience knowledge that my guts will pay for the pleasure for the next day or three :P But mostly I'm not a great fan of sweet stuff apart from some fresh fruits.

I developed a sudden sweet tooth when I first hit full-on menopause, but still with my lifelong aversion to gooey sweets so the result was stuff like putting 2-3 sugars in my coffee, eating plain meringues, sucking on occasional boiled sweets (I think that's 'hard candy' out your way, or it certainly used to be) and the like. I am so very glad that that faded out after a couple of years - sugar is nassssty stuff, preciousss...

There is and always has been one grand exception in my desserts repertoire, though, and that is Battenberg cake (link added in case you grok it not, since it's very much a UK fud). I first discovered it when my nan took me to a tearoom in Piccadilly when I was very wee, and ever since I would have some once or twice a year as a special treat, despite my normally detesting marzipan. But these days it's more like once every year or two as it's harder to find down here!
