Enemies of the American People, That's Us

Yesterday sucked hard enough to make getting to sleep difficult; the Janus decision on the part of the no-longer-afraid-to-show-their-conservative-animus SCOTUS, their upholding of the Muslim ban; the announced retirement of Justice Kennedy, which puts other civil rights, like Roe V Wade, in direct peril.

And today, this happened

While my reportorial caution reminds me that I can't assume the reason was because the shooter hated journalists - my other thought would be a particularly enthusiastic domestic violence perpetrator - my gut tells me it was. This is, after all, the nation whose president told his besotted followers that editors, reporters, photographers, etc. were the enemies of America.

They're not the types who'd believe what Capital Gazette editor Jimmy Debutts said in the 11th and 12th paragraphs of the main Washington Post story. More fools they.

I'll be relieved if some other cause motivated the shooter, and that says something awful about both my desensitization and to this murderous American ecosystem.

ETA: Yep, looking more likely to be a patriotic Fourth Estate hater. Imagine my surprise.

And Harlan Ellison has died

After all, the malign influencer has convinced so many people that it's OK to be hateful and violent that someone with a minor grudge could swell that grudge into the weaponized rage that went off yesterday.

Mind you, from someone looking at the USA from outside, the "weaponized rage" has been a sickness in the US psyche for a long time.

The quote "a well-armed society is a polite society" is so often used by the gun lobby... and it is completely false, a fallacy, a delusion. A well-armed society is a frightened society. Frightened of the things that make them feel they need weapons; frightened of their fellows whose weapons could kill them; frightened of having their weapons taken away. Politeness? Why be polite when you can just shoot someone instead? Why use words when you have guns? It is a spiral of violence that feeds upon itself. (sigh)

And it will take a mind much greater than mine to be able to untangle that mess. Because one needs to address the fear before one can address the guns. Because they won't let go of the guns until they've let go of their fear... but the fear will always be there so long as the guns are still there. It seems to be impossible to solve. (sigh)

Yet almost every time I criticise US culture, a little voice says at the back of my mind "If Americans are so blind to their own lunacy, what foul cankers might there be in Australian culture that I am unable to see?" A question I cannot answer, since I can't see what I can't see.
