Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song
Words: 2,063
Summary: As floral arrangements went, it was rather too large, and altogether too carnivorous. A good thing, then, that their scantily-clad offspring was there with one of her more dangerous cosmetic items, to help Amy and Rory save the Doctor.

Language note: I indulged in my bad habit of deciding to attach languages to my imaginary human-settled Whoniverse worlds. This time it’s Greek, which I have butchered thusly; Louloudi-Thirio means, roughly, Flower-Beast. I’m sorry.

Words: 1,792
Summary: They didn’t hold up the cosmos, of course, but Yaz thought they were a sign that the universe was good. She and the Thirteenth Doctor share some time, and thoughts about traditions of mystic beauty.
Author's Note: This was written, with affection, for
[personal profile] muccamukk , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. She was interested in the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions, especially Yasmin Khan. I hope she likes this. NOTE: In deciding to imagine a facet of Yaz’s faith, I tried to tread carefully, and with respect, largely by keeping my comments as general as possible, while still referencing the tradition — which is not, as  I understand it, a separate strain of the faith, but a practice and understanding of the faith that supersedes labels such as Sunni or Shia — known variously as Sufism or Tasawwuf. To any of my Whoniverse fans who are of the Muslim faith, please accept my apologies for any inaccuracies, or comments that lack that respect, and don’t hesitate to let me know;  I’ll do my best to remedy those.

Title: Cesium and Desist
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: the Thirteenth Doctor, Yasmin Khan, Ryan Sinclair
Words: 1,202
Summary: Lab, kitchen, kitchen, lab … she kept getting the two places mixed up. The Doctor’s latest adventure in baking goes chemically awry.
Author's Note: This was written for
[personal profile] nenya_kanadka , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. She likes the Thirteenth Doctor, and Yaz, and so do I. I hope she doesn't mind that Ryan and Graham found their ways in. Also, after watching numerous videos about volatile metals, I’m sure I shall always eye shiny liquid gold stuff with a jaundiced eye as a result. Updates Are Us

I can't believe how long it's been since I actually posted something, or responded to other folks. Here's my "n things makes a list" post.

1. Vincent is settling in, and Opie, while continuing to growl, seems to be getting used to him. I was saddened when I saw Vincent awaken to the fact that "this other little ginger guy actually doesn't like me! Why?" but I'm hoping that they'll eventually get comfortable with each other. We got a new cat litter pan, or more accurately, a "litter loo" that is essentially a mini-shed for holding the real litter pan. It's taller than our old Booda-box, which allows Vincent to get in, turn around, etc., without getting his fur into the litter or his own leavings (and that is still a big problem; I can hardly wait for his Feb. 2 grooming date, during which he'll have the fur around his butt trimmed. Cleaning a very big cat's behind is an exercise for two people, and it's tough to do well even with two.) The litter loo has the added benefit of being a small table, providing another horizontal surface in a kitchen that needs them.

2. Last Saturday, I attended a Pioneer Press reunion-cum-goodbye-for-the-buyouts-and-earlier-laid-offs party. It was one of the most surprisingly positive, and positively intense, gatherings I've recently been to. Somewhere between 30 and 50 people attended, nearly all of them Pioneer alumni of various types. I saw people I hadn't seen in decades; I saw three of my old editors, including one who I'd served under in the late 1980s; she told me that seeing me and my colleagues was the only reason she'd braved the weather that night (it was pretty bad.) I didn't even mind seeing my last editor; he might have been what tipped me over into taking the buyout, but I realized that I could interact with him pretty darned pleasantly when we weren't forced to interact on a professional basis. There were loads of hugs, freely and enthusiastically given and received. One of my buyout colleagues said, .as we headed home, that it was very much like a high school reunion; you realize that even the people you hated or feared as a high school student have turned into people you are happy to see.

3. A couple of nights ago, I was feeling kind of down - can't even remember why - and my beloved husband put on the first episode of "The War Games," the final adventure for the Second Doctor. We binged the entire adventure over two nights, and it was rollicking good fun. The pacing was remarkably decent, and I was surprised at how much action there was, since I think the received wisdom is that it was the Third Doctor who was action-oriented, and not the Second. The acting varied from "a bit better than decent" to "OMG this is horrible, and it's viewable only as scenery-chewing OTT fun!" The fellow playing the War Chief was marginally better than the guy playing the security chief, and the War Lord was actually pretty good. It was my first encounter with Jamie and Zoe; both actors did well, especially Frazier Hines. Of course, it doesn't do to inspect the plot too closely, lest one break out into snickers and, eventually, guffaws. But I'm so glad I saw it.

4. We in Chicago are bracing for the coldest week thus far this 2018-2019 winter season. By Wednesday, the high temp. for the day will be -10F, and the wind will put daytime wind-chills close to -25. The night time temps and windchills for Tuesday and Wednesday are even more dire. I therefore went out today and got all the necessary things we'll need; Japanese fish cake, bean sprouts, seitan, fried tofu, Japanese and Korean baked goods, mochi, curry and mapo tofu mix ... WHAT??!?

5. Also? Roger Stone was arrested and indicted. The world got a little brighter ....

We Escaped 2018

... and I loved the Dr. Who New Year special. It solidified my feelings about this season; I loved it, for reasons that might run counter to those of other folks.

I'm heading to bed right now, so I'll have to leave my explanation for another time. But I know what I liked, and I'll do my best to explain in another post.

Holidays: Music, Cards, and the Ambiance Therein

I have to go back to work tomorrow, and the knowledge of that stressed me out so badly that my back went into spasm. Silly of me, since  I may only have 10 more days to go. As a matter of fact, after spending last night in a pain-medication-filled stupor, I had a much easier day of it today, at least partially because I remembered that.

The weather outside is truly frightful - we're expecting 3-6 inches of snow, but apparently we must get a steady cold rain ahead of that, so that we have a lovely, glassy, break-your-head-and-or-spine sheet of ice underneath the snow. About 700 flights have been cancelled out of O'Hare already, which I think is a little wimpy, but safety is safety.

I've set up my Christmas and holiday card list, and I managed to get 15 cards done today. I figure if I can do three or four nights of 15 cards each, I'll get most everyone. I'm going to put another post up, letting folks know that they can email me with their snail mail addresses if they'd like a card.

And, since it's after Thanksgiving, I can happily turn on Christmas and holiday music. My taste tends to carols and quasi-religious baroque-ish and Celtic stuff. Bob's tends to secular American tin-pan alley stuff. We get along fairly well, though, by trading off days.

But now I'm going to watch Doctor Who. That's a good way to end my vacation.

Happy Happy Birthday Birthday!!

To [livejournal.com profile] mack_the_spoon and
[personal profile] namarie24  two of the finest young women, and nicest fans, that it's been my pleasure to meet both online and in person. It was a lucky day for me when we first said hello over at Television Without Pity's Doctor Who meet market (far better named LINDA.)

They're creative (I know, because I've had the enjoyment of reading some of their fic), fun, lovers of kitties and Dr. Who, dedicated to their lives' work and just in general a joy to know. I hope one day to host you again chez Casa Kaffyr, and perhaps to cook you a meal or at least order a Chicago pizza for you.

Happy Birthday to both of you!

"Rosa"

I approached this one with a certain amount of trepidation. It's U.S. history, about America's particular, and particularly virulent, racism (which is not to suggest that there isn't virulent racism of various flavors damned near everywhere, but yes, this is in my wheelhouse, so I was worried that it could have been mishandled.) It's written by Brits. The story could have gone very wrong. It didn't, in my opinion. Comments that follow are both Doylist and Watsonian and are under the cut because, while I tried to keep them fairly spoiler-free and I think I was successful, I don't want to take that for granted.

Possibly spoiler-free, but I'm not sure. )

Title: Cycles
Type: Drabble, 100 words
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Clara Oswald
Summary: He was still relearning to care.
Author's Note: I'm not particularly good with drabbles, because my natural urge is to write long. But it's been long enough since I wrote anything, that I figured I'd try going outside my comfort zone. I wrote this in response to one of the Dr. Who challenge communities.

“I’m alright. You get some sleep.”

“You’re sure.”

He knew Clara knew he wouldn’t answer.

They’d lost today. A mission; a life.

Clara had apologized to the survivors because he was still relearning how to care. Her apologies were accepted, with banked resentment on the part of those they’d saved.

There were things he hated about regeneration, rejiggerings of his psyche. Losing empathy, even temporarily, angered him.

It’s part of the cycle he whispered to himself. Victories, defeats, things in-between.

This was why he’d tried to lose empathy, he supposed. He waited for Clara’s return so he could hug her.

Memo To Self:

When you see commentaries that mention "Moffat" and "Doctor Who" prominently in the description or summary, think seriously about not reading them. The odds are high they will feature an author inveighing against The Moff, with others nodding their heads in agreement; by excising such commentaries from your day, you will lower your blood pressure and quite likely save your computer keyboard and screen from spittle and/or breakage.

(Yeah, yeah, folks have a right to their opinion, and I have f'listers who share that opinion. And sure, enough people hew to the Awful Moff School of Whovian Obsession that I could very well be wrong in my love for his run. I don't fucking care. And I get incredibly tired of swimming through the various One Minute Moff Hates. They make it hard-to-impossible for me to react and interact with thoughtful critiques of Seasons Five through Ten. They're out there, but when I've had to slog through page after page after rant after polemic about Moffat to get to them, I want to stab my eyes with a fork.)

Title: The Future in Dreams
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Characters: Jack Harkness, Alonzo Frame
Words:1,585
Summary: Jack knew what would happen. Alonso would miss him terribly at first, but someday he'd call Jack to introduce him to the new person he'd fallen in love with. And that was fine.
Author's note: This is a much delayed 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking  story written for [personal profile] trobadora . One of the characters she likes is Captain Jack Harkness, who happens to be one of my favorite Whoniverse characters as well. I've always wondered what happened after the Tenth Doctor brought Jack and Alonso together. I like to think that they'd have a great deal of time together, but with the reality of Jack's immortality, I can only hope the end of the relationship would be as positive as possible. I like to think the Tenth Doctor would have been happy with what happened, hoping to heal Jack just a bit. I also believe that, even years after Children of Earth, Jack would not be ready to consciously address every heartbreak that brought to him, hence at least one elision.

Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Fiona Lethbridge-Stewart, Kate Lethbridge Stewart, Jo Grant, the Third Doctor
Words: 1,998
Summary: Sometimes it's important to turn something very exciting into very boring spinach. Jo Grant's first meeting with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
Author's Note: A 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking  story written, very belatedly, for [personal profile] liadtbunny . She likes the Third Doctor, and so do I. Apparently Kate Stewart, back when she was little Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. thought that her father had a very unexciting job with UNIT, something she and her mother Fiona (the Brig's first wife) believed, even as they "made up adventures" about him. This story plays with one possible origin of that.

I plan on going back, re-reading, re-looking-at, and, finally, commenting. She is so good at this stuff that I'm afraid to say anything. But I will because I must because I want to.

2. This clip of the Temptations, doing My Girl. The first part is in the studio, and dear sweet lord, how they managed to get all of those musicians in one of the Motown studios at once, there had to be magic involved ... beyond the magic that took place, I mean. Author's Note: Written for
[personal profile] juniperphoenix  for the 2017 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. Like me, she is interested in the ongoing adventures of Clara Oswald and the amazing woman known variously as Ashildr and Lady Me (or possibly Mie, if she likes to mix it up.) I hope that she likes this little story, written for the 2017 fandom_stocking fun, which sees Clara and Ashildr run into (and possibly afoul of) some unusual bounty hunters. I also hope that she forgives the slightly unusual crossover that provides the bounty hunters.
Edited by: No one. I did, however, obsessively read and re-read the story in an effort to ensure grammatical correctness. Any mistakes are purely my own, and will be corrected once pointed out. Note: Tante Rejsende is Google Danish for Aunt Traveler. I took the liberty of deciding that Clara and Ashildr would have decided on a name for their TARDIS fairly early on (especially since "TARDIS" was already taken), and since Ashildr was originally Norse - which could be Danish or Norwegian - the name gained a language. The pronunciation, again per Google, is "Tan-tuh, Riz-nyeh." I apologize to any Dane who knows how badly I've done on this.

Late In The Day Birthday Wishes

I am so very lucky to know all of you out there in journal land, and two of the people I am particularly happy to have met celebrated birthdays today. What with cat purgatory, that almost slipped by me.

[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon  is an adventurer in life, taking on journeys, challenges, setbacks and battles that many people would find impossible to undertake or survive. She is also one of those remarkable humans who can find beauty and good in the tiny corners where many of us would forget to look for them. She is creative, funny, a lover of knowledge, a woman who fights for the people she loves, and somehow finds time to create; she has never let her muse too far out of her sight, even if there are times she thinks the creature has escaped. I am so lucky to have met her in RL, and can report that she is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. And she talks more than I do - which is so cool! My dear, I hope your loved ones showed you how much they love you, and gave you a very good birthday. And may the coming year be better than you could dream of!

[personal profile] editrx  is another adventurer who has dealt with challenge, setback, and the fuckwittery of the world with more bravery and determination than I could ever imagine. In the midst of all that, she's generous with her time. She's funny, fannish, extremely good at what she does, and if I were the kind of fairy godmother I wish I could be, I would wave a wand and make sure that this happy birthday wish was accompanied by more than friendship and respect. May the coming year be thrice as good as you want it to be!

But wait, there's more!

The remarkable
[personal profile] elisi , who celebrates on Oct. 22, is someone for whom I have so much respect that it's impossible to truly describe it. She writes fiction and non-fiction, meta and life observations, while raising a family of remarkable young women, and staying in touch with the world with intelligence and grace. Thank you for being you, and thank you for broadening my world in so very many ways, all through your love of a madman with a box, one that's bigger on the inside. If I am ever on your side of the Atlantic, it would be my honor to take you out for a drink of whatever might be your pleasure. Until then? Continue being awesome, and have a fantastic birthday.

Taking the Plunge

I've decided that I'm going to start uploading Hearts & Moons to AO3, something I've avoided to date. I'll upload one chapter every 4-5 days to start (although I may do the prologue and first chapter at the same time), and I'll try to time the uploads so that the story will be finished by the time I reach Chapter 26.

I made the decision because I've now got two completed chapters, 26 and 27, in the hopper, and the chapter I believe to be the penultimate one, Chapter 28, is somewhere between one-third and one-half completed. After that, there's either one final chapter or a very hefty epilogue.

I think there are enough completed chapters that doing a relatively slow but steady stream of chapters to AO3 will keep me going on the writing front.* After all, I'm already in the "I have to take a break from my Real World work to get another couple of paragraphs written or edited on this story" stage of writing. That bite at the base of my brain (or possibly in my gut) won't lift until the chapter is finished, and once 28 is done, I'll be able to see the route to the exit door, as it were.

So, yeah, taking the plunge, with upload work starting tonight. Wish me luck.

*And if you haven't started reading the story because it's a WIP, you can at least consider starting to read it over on AO3, trusting that things will be finished by the time you reach what is currently the end. If that makes sense.)
