Title: Floral Makeup and Other Follies
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song
Words: 2,063
Summary: As floral arrangements went, it was rather too large, and altogether too carnivorous. A good thing, then, that their scantily-clad offspring was there with one of her more dangerous cosmetic items, to help Amy and Rory save the Doctor.
Author's Note: This was written for

Language note: I indulged in my bad habit of deciding to attach languages to my imaginary human-settled Whoniverse worlds. This time it’s Greek, which I have butchered thusly; Louloudi-Thirio means, roughly, Flower-Beast. I’m sorry.

Words: 1,792
Summary: They didn’t hold up the cosmos, of course, but Yaz thought they were a sign that the universe was good. She and the Thirteenth Doctor share some time, and thoughts about traditions of mystic beauty.
Author's Note: This was written, with affection, for
[personal profile] muccamukk , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. She was interested in the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions, especially Yasmin Khan. I hope she likes this. NOTE: In deciding to imagine a facet of Yaz’s faith, I tried to tread carefully, and with respect, largely by keeping my comments as general as possible, while still referencing the tradition — which is not, as  I understand it, a separate strain of the faith, but a practice and understanding of the faith that supersedes labels such as Sunni or Shia — known variously as Sufism or Tasawwuf. To any of my Whoniverse fans who are of the Muslim faith, please accept my apologies for any inaccuracies, or comments that lack that respect, and don’t hesitate to let me know;  I’ll do my best to remedy those.

Author's Note: This was written for

I hope she doesn't mind that Ryan and Graham found their ways in. Title: A Falcon at Stoke Field
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Shadow of the Tower
Characters: Henry VII, Simnel the Pretender, two guards
Words: 926
Summary: One name had been left behind, the next was never his to begin with. In the aftermath of Stoke Field, Lambert Simnel chooses a new identity.
Author's note: This was written, with great affection, for
[personal profile] thisbluespirit  for [community profile] fandom_stocking  2018. I thank her for luring me into yet another fandom, and with luck, this offering will be acceptable. My research is superficial at best, but the story's two central conceits lie in reports that the young pretender was called by the name he chose in some contemporary accounts (per Wikipedia at least) and that he eventually became a falconer.
Edited by: Unedited, but obsessively reread. Any mistakes are my own.

Title: Cycles
Type: Drabble, 100 words
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Clara Oswald
Summary: He was still relearning to care.
Author's Note: I'm not particularly good with drabbles, because my natural urge is to write long. But it's been long enough since I wrote anything, that I figured I'd try going outside my comfort zone. I wrote this in response to one of the Dr. Who challenge communities.
Disclaimer: I own no Whoniverse characters, and take no coin. They are the sole property of the BBC and their respective creators.
*******   *******

“I’m alright. You get some sleep.”

“You’re sure.”

He knew Clara knew he wouldn’t answer.

They’d lost today. A mission; a life.

Clara had apologized to the survivors because he was still relearning how to care. Her apologies were accepted, with banked resentment on the part of those they’d saved.

There were things he hated about regeneration, rejiggerings of his psyche. Losing empathy, even temporarily, angered him.

It’s part of the cycle he whispered to himself. Victories, defeats, things in-between.

This was why he’d tried to lose empathy, he supposed. He waited for Clara’s return so he could hug her.

kaffyr: A happy smiling superintelligent Corgi (Ein is happy)
Writing, Chihuly, Temporary Ailments

In reverse order:

1) I finally got something written, a drabble for
[community profile] dw100 . Drabbles are my most difficult challenges, because I write long, not short.
2) The four of us went to the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum, right below the Space Needle. It was wonderful - shapes and colors and textures that were amazing, and a garden where Chihuly's glass art interacted organically with, well, the organic garden around it. I didn't take many pictures, and I was ultimately glad; the place was full of people who seemed to want to do nothing more than take selfies, or have people take pictures of them, in front of the art - but very few of those people seemed interested in actually looking at and experiencing the art. When Andy convinced me that he could send me pictures from one of his earlier trips to the museum, it was very freeing.
3) I appear to have successfully fought off some sort of stomach and gut-based bug that bid fair to make the day miserable for me. Hurrah for medications that kept that at bay!
4) We went to the Ballard Locks tonight, to watch the sunset, see salmon swimming up a ladder around the locks, and see boats sailing out to Puget Sound. And then we found a very nice Tex-Mex place to have a late supper and talk about music (Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, and such, because we're old farts.) Totally enjoyable.

And tomorrow is my 63rd birthday.

Title: The Future in Dreams
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Characters: Jack Harkness, Alonzo Frame
Words:1,585
Summary: Jack knew what would happen. Alonso would miss him terribly at first, but someday he'd call Jack to introduce him to the new person he'd fallen in love with. And that was fine.
Author's note: This is a much delayed 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking  story written for [personal profile] trobadora . One of the characters she likes is Captain Jack Harkness, who happens to be one of my favorite Whoniverse characters as well. I've always wondered what happened after the Tenth Doctor brought Jack and Alonso together. I like to think that they'd have a great deal of time together, but with the reality of Jack's immortality, I can only hope the end of the relationship would be as positive as possible. I like to think the Tenth Doctor would have been happy with what happened, hoping to heal Jack just a bit. I also believe that, even years after Children of Earth, Jack would not be ready to consciously address every heartbreak that brought to him, hence at least one elision.

Author:

Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Fiona Lethbridge-Stewart, Kate Lethbridge Stewart, Jo Grant, the Third Doctor
Words: 1,998
Summary: Sometimes it's important to turn something very exciting into very boring spinach. Jo Grant's first meeting with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
Author's Note: A 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking  story written, very belatedly, for [personal profile] liadtbunny . She likes the Third Doctor, and so do I. Apparently Kate Stewart, back when she was little Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. thought that her father had a very unexciting job with UNIT, something she and her mother Fiona (the Brig's first wife) believed, even as they "made up adventures" about him. This story plays with one possible origin of that.

Author's note: Piotr had come to a somewhat knotty truce with Cordelia by the time he died, and I have always wondered at what made him bend his stiff neck enough to begin the rapprochement when Miles was young. I have also thought that the steel in Cordelia's soul would have appealed to Piotr's own nature, which might well have confused the hell out of him. This story is my way of exploring those questions. Author's Note: I couldn't get it done in a decade, but 11 years seemed to be the magic time period. Thank you to everyone who stuck with this ridiculously lengthy WIP; I hope it's been worth the wait, despite 11 years of changing writing style and prowess, and undoubtedly some messed up plot points. Words:3,043
Author's Note: Written for
[personal profile] hamsterwoman , during [community profile] fandom_stocking  2017. I have always wondered what Maia would have wanted for the tiny staff that served Edonomee during his time there, and which he left behind when he boarded the airship to the Untheileinese court. We know so little about Elements that I have taken a liberty in describing Jet as having no set gender (hence “them” and “they”). I also took the liberty of allowing Jet, Iridium, and Radium the ability to work in the ocean and under several atmospheres’ worth of pressure. Like me, she is interested in the ongoing adventures of Clara Oswald and the amazing woman known variously as Ashildr and Lady Me (or possibly Mie, if she likes to mix it up.) I hope that she likes this little story, written for the 2017 fandom_stocking fun, which sees Clara and Ashildr run into (and possibly afoul of) some unusual bounty hunters. I also hope that she forgives the slightly unusual crossover that provides the bounty hunters.
Edited by: No one. I did, however, obsessively read and re-read the story in an effort to ensure grammatical correctness. Any mistakes are purely my own, and will be corrected once pointed out. Note: Tante Rejsende is Google Danish for Aunt Traveler. I took the liberty of deciding that Clara and Ashildr would have decided on a name for their TARDIS fairly early on (especially since "TARDIS" was already taken), and since Ashildr was originally Norse - which could be Danish or Norwegian - the name gained a language. The pronunciation, again per Google, is "Tan-tuh, Riz-nyeh." I apologize to any Dane who knows how badly I've done on this.

Vacations and I Do Not Play Well Together. Not Even on Christmas

I mentioned to BB earlier tonight that I don't believe I've had a completely injury- or illness-free vacation in years. And, I said, it's got to be me at fault, not the vacations. (A bit like the nice boy who wonders why he picks so many mean girls who break up with him ... it's not them, buddy ....)

Blatherings under here )
I am a very silly woman. Then again, I am a silly woman in pain, whose closest relationship over the last 36 hours, other than with her beloved, has been with her heating pad.

Gah.

But the Christmas tree still looks beautiful. And my collection of TARDIS ornaments now stands at two, thanks to FB and Miss Em, and that's wonderful. So, pain or not, today has not been a total loss. Also, I've learned a lot about narwhals For Reasons, and that's also cool.

OK,So I Kind of Love The Silmarillion

I bought it shortly after it was published in 1977, because I was a repeat reader of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and especially loved the appendices. (In fact, back in 1971 or so, I was in the process of writing Tolkien a letter about what I thought was an error in the appendices when I learned he had died. I'm so glad he died before I had a chance to embarrass myself like that, she said shallowly.)

When I first read the book, I was disappointed that it wasn't written in novel form, like LotR. Over the years, however, I found myself returning to it repeatedly, especially for the Ainulindale, the tale of initial creation. I also loved the Akkalabeth, the story of Numenor and its downfall, and I loved parts  of the Quenta Silmarillion, the stories of the first age and the Silmarils, although the stories of Turin Turambar and his family were too dark for me.

Imagine my delight just last night, when something I was reading included a link to this: read it, all you fellow Tolkien lovers (and the many who are far more immersed in Tolkien scholarship and fandom than I am), and enjoy.
[personal profile] camwyn  wrote it back in 2004, and it deserves to be re-discovered on a regular basis, because it is high and brilliant silliness. Also, it's a great way to understand the Silmarillion, while snorting in laughter.

Wow, a post in which I can take delight in something - hurrah!

Taking the Plunge

I've decided that I'm going to start uploading Hearts & Moons to AO3, something I've avoided to date. I'll upload one chapter every 4-5 days to start (although I may do the prologue and first chapter at the same time), and I'll try to time the uploads so that the story will be finished by the time I reach Chapter 26.

I made the decision because I've now got two completed chapters, 26 and 27, in the hopper, and the chapter I believe to be the penultimate one, Chapter 28, is somewhere between one-third and one-half completed. After that, there's either one final chapter or a very hefty epilogue.

I think there are enough completed chapters that doing a relatively slow but steady stream of chapters to AO3 will keep me going on the writing front.* After all, I'm already in the "I have to take a break from my Real World work to get another couple of paragraphs written or edited on this story" stage of writing. That bite at the base of my brain (or possibly in my gut) won't lift until the chapter is finished, and once 28 is done, I'll be able to see the route to the exit door, as it were.

So, yeah, taking the plunge, with upload work starting tonight. Wish me luck.

*And if you haven't started reading the story because it's a WIP, you can at least consider starting to read it over on AO3, trusting that things will be finished by the time you reach what is currently the end. If that makes sense.)

... into the Internet void, for the supremely gifted [livejournal.com profile] lyricwrites, who wrote some of the most powerful and beautiful Who fics it's ever been my pleasure to read (as well as a fantastic meta about Amy Pond's wedding that you should all go read, either for the first time or again.)  After being gifted with twins a few years ago (good lord, they should be about four years of age now - go you, amazing Mom!) she found other things to do than hang around on LJ. But I remember her with fondness and with more than a little awe from a writerly point of view. I hope you're doing well, wherever you are, and that someday you'll be back in these parts - and may your family have given you a birthday that was simply superb.
