Specifically, the AO3 meme, just because. It amused me to see how few comments I've gotten over the years since I started posting. One note: I didn't include the nine meta commentaries I wrote because they're not stories. Well, we're all stories in the end, but ....

Five Things That Make Me Happy

[livejournal.com profile] mack_the_spoon tagged me with this meme, and though I'm not normally very good at memes, or indeed all that interested in them, this one attracted me because it's simple - I am a simple creature - and it was a very positive sort of thing. I do love many things, so let's see if I can tell you about five things that make me happy.

1. BB. He is, quite simply, the best thing in my life. It may seem disrespectful to call him the best thing, but what I mean by that is that he does so much for me, and has taught me so much, and has been there so often for me ... he is my best friend; he's my voice of reason when I need one, and that's oh, so often; he's the one who kills the cockroaches, he's the one who tells me I look good when I know I'm looking seedy, he's the one who knows I need a hug. He's the one who tells me, who convinces me, that things are going to be alright. He's the one who introduced me to jazz (and truly nurtured my inherent love of music in general), and Firesign Theater, and martinis. He knows my sense of humor, and puts up with my lack of humor when I'm in particularly dour moods. He is the best.

2. Personal letters that come by mail. Whether they're handwritten or typed up, getting a real letter in the mail takes me back to the days when getting news from friends who lived far away was a special treat. The days you'd wait between the time you mailed your own letter - which you'd carefully written with as much news, thoughts, meanderings, worries and joys as you could possibly do before your fingers tired or your typewriter jammed - and the time you got an answer, with any luck as jammed packed in answer, were interminable. And the day the letter arrived, oh, it was wonderful!

3. Music. I grew up with music; my Nana and my mother sang, and sang beautifully. I had piano lessons for years, and have always regretted giving them up. I love almost every kind of music, although rock and roll gets my blood flowing the most, and jazz talks to my head and heart almost as much as I've grown older. Even music I thought I didn't like, like various iterations of country, or were bored by, like whatever folk is, I learned to appreciate. Music is language I can share with everyone, and it's a language BB helped me get better at. Without music, my inner life would be an echoing, empty chamber.

4. Cooking and writing. Yes, definitely cheating here by putting both things in the same boat, but they are both ways I can create, and I love that. Cooking is a way I can carry on my Nana's traditions in the kitchen, and those of my mother's too, so that's one reason. It's creation with short term gratification, but with challenges (as anyone who has ever wrestled with making a good pie crust can tell you.) It's also tied in with the joy of feeding family and friends, which of course is also tied in to ego gratification, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Writing is far more difficult for me, whether it's news and feature writing, or fiction writing. But I could no more stop writing, as slow as I am, than I could stop walking or talking. This happiness comes from my fiction writing, and it comes at least in part from knowing that I'm good at it, and that I can create stories that people love. I doubt that I will ever return to writing original fiction, but writing fan fiction makes me more happy than I've ever been when writing other things.

5. Fandom. By that, I mean many things. I mean the traditional science fiction fandom that I discovered in 1977 when I went to my first World Science Fiction Convention, and which led me to a circle of music-oriented fans in Minneapolis in the 1980s and early 1990s. Traditional fandom was my first real intellectual and emotional home apart from my family. It was the place where I discovered that other people really loved the books I loved, and who didn't think I was weird, mockable, or bullyable, because of it. (Even my family, who indulged my reading, looked at it askance). Bless traditional fandom forever. And now, I am a part of online fandom, which is a child of traditional fandom, but who, like all children, has grown into a creature all its own. I have friends, and friendly acquaintances, all across this globe, people who helped me hang on to happiness, who encouraged my writing, who challenged my mind, who have been wonderful to read and to interact with for the past nine-plus years. You are all part of my life, and you enrich it so much. Thank you!

And let's see, I
should tag people, although it's definitely a voluntary thing, especially if you've done this before. So ... [personal profile] a_phoenixdragon , [personal profile] penlessej , [personal profile] elisi , [personal profile] jjpor , and [personal profile] ljgeoff  - tag, you're it!

Honorable mentions: Doctor Who, especially Nine, Eleven, and River; Japanese curry and croquettes; Chicago; anime.

Positivity, Redux

1. At the end of the another long day, and returning home from another meeting, I was again presented with a parking space within paces of my own back door. The Great Spider, who often provides parking spaces if you pray to her, using the phrase "Come on, Great Spider; come oonnnn, Great Spider!!!", was there for me again tonight. Thanks, Great Spider!

2. I do not have a headache. This is grand!

3. And this happened. I think very little of the current Prime Minister of Canada, but even I can share his elation at the discovery of one of Franklin's ships -  if only because the discovery proves that Inuit reports about the fate of some expedition members were right, even though They Didn't Come From White People. (Mind you, I've often thought that anyone choosing to start an expedition into the unknown on ships named Erebus and Terror would have had little reason to expect a sunny outcome.)

4. In connection with 3, there's this. It still raises the hair on my arms and the back of my neck, every time I hear it - the only song of his that ever did that to me. When I hear it, I feel the North, and that fills me with awe.

I decided I would try this. I don't believe I've ever done this before, because I have lots of lovely LJ friends and many here at/over at Dreamwidth. But it couldn't hurt, she said with admirable disregard for Murphy-ish reality.

Maybe I'll see you there; I intend ti go through a lot of the posts over there.

Communication! What a concept; it's a gas!

This is That Meme

I picked it up, as I mention on the clip, from folks like [personal profile] a_phoenixdragon , [livejournal.com profile] eve11, and [personal profile] flowsoffire . I really enjoyed hearing them - I hope folks enjoy this. (Please forgive however the embed code on the Sound Cloud clip ends up looking; I put it under a cut to save bandwidth.)

Under here ) ETA: The other thing I was supposed to do was to provide the questions as well, for anyone else interested in spreading the word (see whut I did thar?)
And here they are:
  • What is your username, and where did you come up with it?
  • Tell us where you are from and something about it
  • When did you start watching DW? When did you get into fandom?
  • Who is your favorite Doctor? Who is your favorite companion?
  • Pronounce the following words: Aunt, Route, Caramel, Syrup, Pajamas, Potato, Gif, Tumblr, TARDIS, Brigadier, Bad Wolf, Vortex Manipulator, Morbius, Ponds, Sonic, Eye of Orion, Susan, Polly, Pertwee, Eccleston, Adric, Capaldi, Clara, Medusa Cascade, Tereleptil, Cybermat, Vashta Nerada, Sweetie, Zygon, Dalek, Raxicoricofallipatorius, your favorite bit of anatomy, and a dirty word of your choosing.
  • Share something you love about your primary DW ship. If you prefer, share something about your favorite episode.
  • Share a favorite story or piece of art/vid (with fandom/pairing/author) that you think everyone should read or view.
  • What is your favorite DW quote?
  • If you could travel to anywhere in Time and Space, from Earth history or any of the worlds on the show, where would you go?
  • Do you have a hobby outside of fandom?
  • Anything else you'd like to add?

And, as I mentioned on the clip, here are links to some of my favorite stories (and I added a couple of vids that I think are absolutely tug-at-your-heart, impress-your-head lovely.)
Fic recs here;
One fic that is very important to me for what it says to me about River Song;
My current three favorite videos: here, here and here.

Oh, RLY? Yah, RLY

I am indeed going to do that television meme that everyone else is doing. First, because, like giving birthday greetings to wonderful people, this is enjoyable. Second, because it's nice and shallow fun (the birthday greetings are heartfelt, so they don't count as shallow.) And third, because this may give me an idea of how much television I actually watch.

Here''s the basic information.

Bold all of the following TV shows of which you've seen 3 or more episodes.
Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode.
*Asterisk if you have at least one full season on tape or DVD*
If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order.)

The embarrassing thing is that because of the "bold where you've seen 3 or more episodes" - which is actually a very small amount for any given show, and doesn't reflect whether those were scattered across years or actually reflected serious destination tv - this falsely appears to show that I spent many of my formative years glued to the idiot's lantern. Which I totally did didn't.

Into the Void!!!

Yes, I Gave In and Voted.

You could too, you know. Over on LJ, fandom is having a bit of annual fun voting for its various favorite (or at least favored) characters at
[livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness. Although some of my favorites have long since bitten the dust, there are others still out there and going strong. And because I believe in silly fannish memes the great tradition of casting one's ballot and pimpin' promoting one's choices, here are mine.

Because she's Martha; smart, brave, inventive, empathetic but willing to make tough decisions, loving, observant and eventually able to call the Doctor on his shit before leaving of her own accord.

Because she's Parker; quirky, vulnerable, brave, thorough, constantly evolving and becoming a better person, plus being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound walk off a building with confidence and elan.

Because she's Kara Frakkin' Thrace; best pilot in the Fleet, full of love and fear and able to use both to lead people in the right direction.

Go over and take a look at some of the wonderful comments and gifs from fans of the characters who've made it to The Sweet Sixteen. Some of them are just brilliant, and it's largely a friendly sort of jostling this year.

Even if you don't vote for my favorites, there might be someone else you'd like to vote for.

[personal profile] masakochan  pointed out that the posters link back to the 2011 finals. I don't know why, since I took them directly from this year's group of posters. It is a mystery. But go, vote for Parker; she's in a close race!

And Now, The Time Has Come

... the end. Goodness, I can't believe I'm actually at this point, but we've reached Day 30 of the Doctor Who meme. I started it back on July 15 of last year, and I've had a great deal of fun with it. I don't know what I'm going to fill this journal with, now that it's done.

The final day is "Whatever Tickles Your Fancy" but before I figure out what that fancy might be, let's take a wander through Days 1 through 29, shall we?What's Come Before )

Threshold of the End ... Doctor the Twelfth

In more than one way, obviously. We've reached the last day but one in this meme.  I've moved with near-geological slowness, but that's generally my MO throughout life (I will, in fact, be late for my own funeral) so I'm not sweating it.

What question have we been asked to answer tonight, hmmmmm?

Who You Think Should be the Next Doctor )

Two Days In a Row - Goodness!
It's Day 28 of the 30 Day Doctor Who meme for me, and the subject it asks me to talk about - a Doctor Who episode idea I created myself - is one I actually find difficult to approach. That's odd, perhaps, given my forays into writing fan fiction, but it's true. Still, I'll take a stab at it.

Two for One
Actors is Actors

Today, Gentle Reader, you get two days for the price of one. That's because I don't separate actors into male or female. It's a long story, having to do with my evolving dislike of gender and sexual segregation by language, to which I won't subject you. Just know that "favorite actor" and "favorite actress" are non-starters for me. Therefore, as I said, two for one - and a very image-heavy two for one at that; you've been warned.

Yes, I Did Indeed Catch March Madness
And I'm asking everyone I know - or rather the infinitesimally small number of my Whoniversal friends who haven't, in all likelihood, already done so - to raise the banner for the Doctor and cast their vote on his behalf. He's made it through to the finals, and it would be a hoot and a holler to see him win. It would certainly bring a smile to my face, and after a day of midwestern union-busting and Washington D.C. Muslim-bashing and such in RL, a grin is desperately needed.

(Also, check out one of the first "Vote For Eleven" displays in the comment thread, and I defy you not to get a chill up your spine or a tear in your eye, or both.)

I Was Prescient

I said my run at the 30 Day Doctor Who Meme wouldn't be done before the arrival of 2011, and by god, I was right!
I also said it would get done, so here is ...

kaffyr: The TARDIS says hello (Liz 10 Rules)

If I could, I would ... but I'm just too damned lazy, and not nearly brave enough.

You are absolutely brilliant. You are the smartest person you know. You have an odd beauty about you in that your are attractive, but look like you should be a child. You are very serious about most things, but have a hidden playful side. You like to help out wherever possible but usually like to be the one to figure out the solution to every problem. Your taste in clothing is questionable, but you do have an outfit for every possible occasion. You will end up marrying a travel companion, completely hate them, and inherit a title of nobility.

Meme, memety meme.

You Are All Friends, Even If We Haven't Met

This has been ganked from all over; unlike many of the "put this in your lj" requests, this one I can unreservedly appreciate.

Copy and Paste if you have enjoyed the blessing of meeting people online that you never would have met any other way. This is an end of the year shout out to the many friends I have never been in the same room with but who have inspired, amused, comforted, encouraged, and touched me in so many ways. Here's to another year together.

There are so many folks I have "met" through Live Journal - people it has been my pleasure to get to know, as much as possible, through pixels and the printed word. Thank you, all of you, for enriching my life, for giving me support when I've needed it, for the occasional kick in the pants when I've needed it, and for the gifts of your talented words, your wit, your icon making genius, your ears, your minds and your hearts.
