Title: So What. Big Deal.
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe/The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Characters: Natasha Romanov, Bruce Banner, Tony Stark, Buckaroo Banzai, Rawhide
Words: 3,509
Summary: "Why do I feel like a kindergartner with a bad attitude when I’m trying to talk to a man whose first name comes straight out of Romper Room?" The teamwork of Tony Stark and Buckaroo Banzai, as witnessed by Natasha Romanov ... and one or two others.
Author's Note: Written belatedly as a fandom_stocking 2018 gift for
[personal profile] rathany  /Mangotea, who is not only a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but someone who shares my love of one of the most quirky fandoms out there: Buckaroo Banzai. Although they indicated they are rarely fans of fusions, I am throwing myself on their mercy with this crossover between the two fandoms, in hopes that it might tickle their fancy.
NOTE 1: Much of the feel for the Buckaroo Banzai side of this story comes from Earl Mac Rauch's novel "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension!" The novel's style is a loving pastiche of the old "Doc Savage" stories. I hope I've done well by both the movie and Rauch's book.
NOTE 2: Tony's and Natasha's language is pretty salty, at least partly in comparison with B. Banzai.
NOTE 3: Āgerachini is Amharic for "Our Homeland," at least per Google Translate. I apologize to speakers of Amharic if I misused the word
Edited by: my beloved [livejournal.com profile] dr_whuh (aka [personal profile] buckaroobob ), who is also a fan of B. Banzai)

Title: Floral Makeup and Other Follies
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song
Words: 2,063
Summary: As floral arrangements went, it was rather too large, and altogether too carnivorous. A good thing, then, that their scantily-clad offspring was there with one of her more dangerous cosmetic items, to help Amy and Rory save the Doctor.
Author's Note: This was written for
[personal profile] juliet316 , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. Like me, she likes the Eleventh Doctor and River Song, as well as River's parents and the Doctor's in-laws.
Language note: I indulged in my bad habit of deciding to attach languages to my imaginary human-settled Whoniverse worlds. This time it’s Greek, which I have butchered thusly; Louloudi-Thirio means, roughly, Flower-Beast. I’m sorry.

[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: The Goblin Emperor
Characters: Maia Drazhar, Chenelo Drazharan, Csevet Aisava, Cala Athmaza, Deret Beshelar, original character
Words: 3,394
Summary: His father, Setheris, the Untheileneise Court; everyone had endeavored to erase his mother. They did not succeed. Edrihasavar gains a token of Cheleno Drazharin, Ethuverasid Zhasan.
Author's note: Written for
[personal profile] hamsterwoman  for [community profile] fandom_stocking  2018; I have taken the liberty of inventing an elven and goblin tradition, in which the death of anyone — including the emperor — is followed, if possible, by the shutting up of their private room or rooms for a period of time, no less than six months and no more than 12, to be followed by the disposal and dispersal of the belongings inside.
Linguistic note: Ulishenathaän is the word used to describe a token of the dead.

Title: The Pillars of Creation
Author: [personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: The Thirteenth Doctor, Yasmin Khan, Ryan Sinclair
Words: 1,792
Summary: They didn’t hold up the cosmos, of course, but Yaz thought they were a sign that the universe was good. She and the Thirteenth Doctor share some time, and thoughts about traditions of mystic beauty.
Author's Note: This was written, with affection, for
[personal profile] muccamukk , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. She was interested in the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions, especially Yasmin Khan. I hope she likes this. NOTE: In deciding to imagine a facet of Yaz’s faith, I tried to tread carefully, and with respect, largely by keeping my comments as general as possible, while still referencing the tradition — which is not, as  I understand it, a separate strain of the faith, but a practice and understanding of the faith that supersedes labels such as Sunni or Shia — known variously as Sufism or Tasawwuf. To any of my Whoniverse fans who are of the Muslim faith, please accept my apologies for any inaccuracies, or comments that lack that respect, and don’t hesitate to let me know;  I’ll do my best to remedy those.

Title: Cesium and Desist
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: the Thirteenth Doctor, Yasmin Khan, Ryan Sinclair
Words: 1,202
Summary: Lab, kitchen, kitchen, lab … she kept getting the two places mixed up. The Doctor’s latest adventure in baking goes chemically awry.
Author's Note: This was written for
[personal profile] nenya_kanadka , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. She likes the Thirteenth Doctor, and Yaz, and so do I. I hope she doesn't mind that Ryan and Graham found their ways in. Also, after watching numerous videos about volatile metals, I’m sure I shall always eye shiny liquid gold stuff with a jaundiced eye as a result. I’m convinced that the beauty of cesium should only be appreciated in still images.

Title: A Falcon at Stoke Field
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Shadow of the Tower
Characters: Henry VII, Simnel the Pretender, two guards
Words: 926
Summary: One name had been left behind, the next was never his to begin with. In the aftermath of Stoke Field, Lambert Simnel chooses a new identity.
Author's note: This was written, with great affection, for
[personal profile] thisbluespirit  for [community profile] fandom_stocking  2018. I thank her for luring me into yet another fandom, and with luck, this offering will be acceptable. My research is superficial at best, but the story's two central conceits lie in reports that the young pretender was called by the name he chose in some contemporary accounts (per Wikipedia at least) and that he eventually became a falconer.
Edited by: Unedited, but obsessively reread. Any mistakes are my own.
Disclaimer: I own nothing, particularly Henry VII or Lambert Simnel,  and take no coin.

kaffyr: An ostrich holding a Christmas tree decoration (Christmostrich)
As It Says on the Tin

I'm still here. And I want to post again on a number of things, including getting back up to speed in writing fic again; my deep need to comment on other peoples' posts, many of which have intrigued me, or made me want to share a thought or two; learning that my childhood home has been saved from teardown by being moved slightly; my ambivalent thoughts on the holiday season this year; the wonderful smell of the Christmas tree we just brought into the livingroom; and my inordinate happiness at sending out 59 hard-copy holiday cards, with some electronic cards to follow ...

... but I can't get my brain to cooperate.

Still decompressing, and still trying to figure out the whole "retired" thing.

Back shortly, I promise, she said, more or less confidently.

Title: Cycles
Type: Drabble, 100 words
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Clara Oswald
Summary: He was still relearning to care.
Author's Note: I'm not particularly good with drabbles, because my natural urge is to write long. But it's been long enough since I wrote anything, that I figured I'd try going outside my comfort zone. I wrote this in response to one of the Dr. Who challenge communities.
Disclaimer: I own no Whoniverse characters, and take no coin. They are the sole property of the BBC and their respective creators.
*******   *******

“I’m alright. You get some sleep.”

“You’re sure.”

He knew Clara knew he wouldn’t answer.

They’d lost today. A mission; a life.

Clara had apologized to the survivors because he was still relearning how to care. Her apologies were accepted, with banked resentment on the part of those they’d saved.

There were things he hated about regeneration, rejiggerings of his psyche. Losing empathy, even temporarily, angered him.

It’s part of the cycle he whispered to himself. Victories, defeats, things in-between.

This was why he’d tried to lose empathy, he supposed. He waited for Clara’s return so he could hug her.

Title: The Future in Dreams
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Characters: Jack Harkness, Alonzo Frame
Words:1,585
Summary: Jack knew what would happen. Alonso would miss him terribly at first, but someday he'd call Jack to introduce him to the new person he'd fallen in love with. And that was fine.
Author's note: This is a much delayed 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking  story written for [personal profile] trobadora . One of the characters she likes is Captain Jack Harkness, who happens to be one of my favorite Whoniverse characters as well. I've always wondered what happened after the Tenth Doctor brought Jack and Alonso together. I like to think that they'd have a great deal of time together, but with the reality of Jack's immortality, I can only hope the end of the relationship would be as positive as possible. I like to think the Tenth Doctor would have been happy with what happened, hoping to heal Jack just a bit. I also believe that, even years after Children of Earth, Jack would not be ready to consciously address every heartbreak that brought to him, hence at least one elision.

kaffyr: Dream Lord quote (Poke a stick at the Unknown)
Wow. Such Inactivity. Much Inarticulate. Wow.

I've been completely AWOL over the past couple of weeks, at least in terms of posting. Getting back to work, dealing with My Boss, The Douche, has taken too much brain power for me to be able to say anything intelligent.

I've been at creative loose ends since completing "Hearts and Moons." I'm working on the last of my fandom_stocking IOUs, but I find myself thinking, "Oh, I've got to work on -" and then come to a complete stop. Oh. It's done. It's finished. What do i do now? I'm beginning to think that I need to have a novel-length piece to work on constantly, or I'm not happy with my writing.  That's a little weird. More than a little, especially since I don't have much of an idea about what I could make into a full length story. I feel like I want to do something with Twelve, but I don't know what. Or possibly Clara and Me. Again, I don't know what I could do.

In far more superficial and silly news. I've decided that I like having artificial nails. I got french tip acrylics (Wow! She knows the lingo!) for the wedding, and I loved them, although it's been difficult to type with the length I chose. So Friday, I went to a local nail salon that had been recommended to me; I had the nails "filled" - having the hard acrylic gel ground down and reapplied to cover the section of nail that was freshly grown out - and I had the tips ground down. They aren't quite as elegant now, but it's much more easy to type. And they still look great. The only downside is that the nail technician actually uses a Dremel tool to grind down sections of the extremely hard acrylic finish. And no matter how careful the technician is. the tool also occasionally grinds portions of the actual finger. Yes, it's painful.

I've spent most of my life biting my nails to the quick. On those occasions where I've let them grow, they've been thin and so sharp that I've actually cut myself with my own nails. And they've split and been pretty ugly. So getting fake nails that look lovely and are hard as, well, nails, without being uncomfortably sharp? It's wonderful.

(I did think, while the nails were really long. of how much of a class thing having long nails is. It's basically saying to the world, "I don't need to work with my hands, so I can have really unworkabley long nails."

Title: Kate and the Jo Grant Spinach Strategy
Author:
[personal profile] kaffyr
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Fiona Lethbridge-Stewart, Kate Lethbridge Stewart, Jo Grant, the Third Doctor
Words: 1,998
Summary: Sometimes it's important to turn something very exciting into very boring spinach. Jo Grant's first meeting with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
Author's Note: A 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking  story written, very belatedly, for [personal profile] liadtbunny . She likes the Third Doctor, and so do I. Apparently Kate Stewart, back when she was little Kate Lethbridge-Stewart. thought that her father had a very unexciting job with UNIT, something she and her mother Fiona (the Brig's first wife) believed, even as they "made up adventures" about him. This story plays with one possible origin of that.

Author:

Characters: Piotr Vorkosigan, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Olivia Vorbarra Vorkosigan
Words: 1,216
Summary: Piotr's dreams brought together two women who should have met, and he wasn't prepared for what they taught him.
Author's note: Piotr had come to a somewhat knotty truce with Cordelia by the time he died, and I have always wondered at what made him bend his stiff neck enough to begin the rapprochement when Miles was young. I have also thought that the steel in Cordelia's soul would have appealed to Piotr's own nature, which might well have confused the hell out of him. This story is my way of exploring those questions. Since I'm not aware that LMB ever named Aral's older brother, or his sister, I've taken the liberty of using the names used by a_shepherd on AO3

I Do Indeed Exist

Although I haven't done much posting. I did manage to get another chapter of Hearts & Moons uploaded, and the next chapter is about 2/3rds done. (I'm not talking any more about "last chapter" because I don't want to be like the boy who cried wolf, which was what I was in danger of becoming. We shall see what happens over the next little while, and I shall endeavor not to jinx myself.)

Bob and I are largely recovered from what various doctors finally decided was the "bacterial flu." Whatever. If they couldn't figure out what it was, and if the blood tests didn't help the detective work, then by all means, call it what you will. We both ended up taking antibiotics. I really don't like taking them, firstly because I really don't want to be in absolute need of them somewhere down the road, only to learn that no antibiotic will work on me and, secondly, because antibiotics make everything taste weird and do unpleasant things to the necessary biota in one's body.

Still, much better, so hurrah for antibiotics.

I am into the third week with my new boss. I haven't killed him. Only 30 more months ....

Bob and I went to see "Black Panther" on Friday, and if you haven't gone to see it yet, try to make time for it. It's pretty much glorious. Next on my list: "A Wrinkle in Time."

All Told, Pretty Acceptable

Because he's home, he's home!

So, yeah, as the title says ...

health stuff no one has to read )
Still, flu or not, I had things I had to do today. I tidied the kitchen, went out and Costco'd for dry cat food and a couple of other necessaries, plus some cranberry orange things that were half cookie and half cake, and very delightful with a hot cup of tea. Last night, before I collapsed, I folded the last of the clean laundry, and now I only have the dirty laundry to deal with. One has no idea how much having an in-unit washer and dryer means until one spends much of the day in bed; then tearing the sheets off and cleaning them is both a luxury and necessary for one's mental health.

I've been keeping an eye on the political landscape, and hoping that the chickens Mueller is feeding become large enough to squash 45 when they come home to roost. Further deponent saith naught because it's fluffy bunny time. Which I declare any time the world starts getting too negatively overwhelming, and I'm talking about or considering that state too much. It's gotten said many times over the last few months. Fluffy bunnies, fluffy bunnies, fluffy bunnies.

I'm into Chapter 30, and it's coming along. It's over 500 words!

I'll stand here and let those of you who can easily push thousands of really good words into good stories within a day snicker. Look, I'm in awe of y'all. I can't write fast, not to save my life. Possibly to save someone else's life ... but I digress.

I have other things to do: I have some meta to read, a friendly Texan to call on the morrow (you know who you are, and you don't know how much your call, as truncated as it had to be on deadline day, lifted my spirits), more writing to do, a little Canadian gloating about our Olympic medal count, along with mourning that our curling and hockey teams lost their various series. Canadians and complacency mix badly. Then I have people's posts to read, and intelligent comments to make on those posts. Yes, a busy day tomorrow.

*For various powers of "only," of course.

Words:3,043
Author's Note: Written for
[personal profile] hamsterwoman , during [community profile] fandom_stocking  2017. I have always wondered what Maia would have wanted for the tiny staff that served Edonomee during his time there, and which he left behind when he boarded the airship to the Untheileinese court. I choose to believe that he would have treated them as well as he could, especially once he had a year or two of rule under his belt, and that his affection for Aäno’s voice might have led him in this direction. We know so little about Elements that I have taken a liberty in describing Jet as having no set gender (hence “them” and “they”). I also took the liberty of allowing Jet, Iridium, and Radium the ability to work in the ocean and under several atmospheres’ worth of pressure. Author's Note: Written for
[personal profile] juniperphoenix  for the 2017 [community profile] fandom_stocking  fun. Like me, she is interested in the ongoing adventures of Clara Oswald and the amazing woman known variously as Ashildr and Lady Me (or possibly Mie, if she likes to mix it up.) I hope that she likes this little story, written for the 2017 fandom_stocking fun, which sees Clara and Ashildr run into (and possibly afoul of) some unusual bounty hunters. I also hope that she forgives the slightly unusual crossover that provides the bounty hunters.
Edited by: No one. I did, however, obsessively read and re-read the story in an effort to ensure grammatical correctness. Any mistakes are purely my own, and will be corrected once pointed out. Note: Tante Rejsende is Google Danish for Aunt Traveler. I took the liberty of deciding that Clara and Ashildr would have decided on a name for their TARDIS fairly early on (especially since "TARDIS" was already taken), and since Ashildr was originally Norse - which could be Danish or Norwegian - the name gained a language. The pronunciation, again per Google, is "Tan-tuh, Riz-nyeh." I apologize to any Dane who knows how badly I've done on this.

Disclaimer: As much as I wish it were otherwise, no Whoniverse character is mine. They are the sole property of the BBC and their respective creators. I take no coin or credit, but do thank the BBC for letting me play in its sandbox.
Note: Because this is a long chapter, Live Journal may eliminate paragraph breaks, so you might want to read on Dreamwidth.
Linguistic notes: at the end.

Things I've Done Since I Last Posted

  • Gone to see Thor: Ragnarok last night with BB. Laughed and enjoyed myself quite a bit. Chris Hemsworth has a light comic touch (and so does Cate Blanchett as the villain, which was a pleasant surprise,) the writing was witty and light, the plot held together rather well for a superhero movie, and of course there was plenty of Hiddleston/Loki and a very funny Ruffalo/Hulk. Light, colorful, and very few "Blow up the universe! Loudly!" scenes. A perfect movie to take one's mind off of ... well, 2017 in general.
  • Dealt with another sick cat. Luckily, this is just a bad cold (both BB and I have experienced the delight of having Opie sneeze - wetly, and multiple times in one explosion - in our faces.)  We're giving him a med prescribed by the vet to keep him hungry, since he's lost some weight, at least partly because no one wants to eat when they have a cold. Luckily, he does eat the pill if it's in a pill pocket and then covered with mushy wet food. That's really good, because the one time we pilled him by hand, it was horrendous. He's big, and strong, and very squirrelly.
  • (Cancer kitty is doing quite well. Apart from becoming too fond of wet food. No more dry food for him, apparently. Heh.)
  • Done a little more on the final chapter of H&M. Losing hope of finishing it this year, but still working on it.
  • Watched the 2006 BBC Jane Eyre. Toby Stephens is far too pretty as Rochester (I actually liked George C. Scott as a good Rochester), but hey, Toby Stephens is pretty, so it was fun to watch. Ruth Wilson was excellent as Jane. It made me drag out my copy of Jane Eyre to read. God, Victorian literature is bloody wordy - but Charlotte Bronte manages to keep the story going.
  • Now I have to go and clean the place, because I have union folk coming over to do union stuff, and I don't want them to think I'm a slatternly housekeeper.
